The author is really good at making you feel the sheer hopelessness of her characters position. Whenever the MC was scared, conflicted, or hopeless, I was right there with him.

Once Upon a Texas Train - Full Movie (PG)

The situation he's in is complicated and every time he explores a solution, it feels like he's walking on a razor's edge with disaster and death on either side. I was holding my breath through half the book. Another notable quality of this book is it's ability to make believable, harsh antagonists and anti-heroes. The aliens perform unspeakable acts of cruelty and treat the humans like garbage, but by the end I could see why they did it and even respect them to a certain degree.

I didn't agree with what they did ultimately, but I could see why they felt like they had no other choice. I was somewhat annoyed by a few things, though. The hero has claustrophobia and this weakness is built up like it's going to be a significant hurdle for him to overcome. Why bother having it? Everyone was treating it like some huge deal. Also, even though I could see why the MC and his friends became loyal soldiers, I didn't understand why they would turn on each other for it. And finally, the kids were supposedly each assigned a number that was to replace their name to help strip them of their individually, however, nobody is referred to by their number besides MC!

I only knew the numbers of two characters. Everyone else was always called by their real names or some nickname. I feel like the author just wanted her MC to be called zero. However, it was ultimately a solid book. What can I say? By the 3rd page I was hooked, sucked in, ground up, addicted and like so many other reviewers, I can't get enough! I've been reading science fiction since I was a kid, I used to pick up those monthly periodicals that had a collection of science fiction shorts in them and from them I found the masters and then went on to read the novels.

I got this book during a sale from BookBub and paid roughly half for it, by the time I was halfway through it I was back here paying full price for the 3 book collection. I haven't read science fiction this good in 35 years! I love her writing, it grabs you and doesn't let you go, I've read all the Zero books, I started in mid May and I'm finished with the series and halfway through her first Outer Bounds book.

Now I'm one of many on facebook begging her to finish Zero book four! She's the best author to hit the genre in 30 to 40 years! Buy these books, you won't regret it! My expectation was not met. She has a lean, mean, and - dare I say it? She writes battle scenes like an ex-soldier. Military people in her family or is she former military? Or maybe it's all that rasslin' with Kodiak brown bears? She writes with a good command of the English language, but more importantly keeps her writing in synch with the characters while avoiding the bane of indie writers: I think the book could've stood a bit of editing; for me, the brutal training scenes were a tad repetitive.

But I appreciated the unrelenting reality of the alien "boot camp" and the courage of the author to portray it unflinchingly. I never had the sense that she was getting off on the violence or the incredibly tame and off-camera sex scenes an approach I favor in my own novels , nor did I find any of the unpleasant aspects gratuitous. When you are drafted by an alien species whose imperative is to produce hardened soldiers no matter what the cost, expect to feel some pain. I'm a fan of the author and plan to check out her other stuff. Joe Dobbs is an unlikely 14 year old hero.

While his younger brother is the smart and unconventional one, Joe is like his dad, the Marine. Joe becomes their champion, and in the process he becomes a leader. These are not pretty adventures, they are hard and dirty and dangerous with volatile characters. I could not put it down! Start the thrilling series the literary world is raving about.

The military trained him. The CIA wants him. He only wants revenge.

The plot are pretty standard without any embellishments but do its work. And the author is ruthless, this is actually the only real complaint, I have. The story and theme are so easy going that the deaths becomes There is a disjunction here that bothers me. Also the worldbuilding is a bit vague and seems pretty superhero vanilla, but it usually is in the start of a series. This is my first foray into the "superheroes' " adventure" genre and I must say, I've enjoyed it tremendously.

The very prolific Mr. Healy is very adept at transporting his readers into the world, and hearts and minds of his characters, particularly the protagonist, Mustang Sally. The action-packed adventure scenes are spine-tingling and somewhat sad in some, because of the demise of a few of the characters.

The "romance" and also family-aspects of the book serve to give balance to the whole plot. Overall, this is quite a ride I' m imagining what it must be like if there is also an illustrated comics version form of this as in Wonder Woman. And, if a movie could be made out of this book, wow! I highly recommend this to every book lover. When picking up a novel based around the subject of superheroes, I feel it can be a crap shoot. I would definitely recommend it and I look forward to reading more of the JC Universe! I appear to be on a streak where I read a lot of superhero tales. Ian Healy's Just Cause was the latest, and while I don't feel its the best, it definitely stands up well to comparison with hte many other offerings out there.

Ian writers with a smooth style that makes for easy reading. He doesn't use a lot of description, but there is enough that you can build a picture of what's occuring and where. The characters are good, if a bit flat. The main character Salena Thompson is well developed and described, but others seemed to be mostly a power and maybe a physical description.

Deep descriptions of personalities or even showing Salena's interactions with any but the most important characters was uncommmon. I did see two issues. The first was the final climatic fight. For all of the build-up to it, the descriptions here were paper thin, and in fact the end of hte fight was so abrupt as to ignore some of the concerns the characters had entering the fight. It was like Ian decided "I need to bring this to an end. The second was the villain. He's described as an evil mastermind, but its almost at the point where I consider him completely over-the-top.

This is probably one of my biggest concerns with any superhero story. There is a point where the pwoer levels just become so ridicilous that the story loses almost all of its punch. For me the villain here is right at that limit, and I found the conflict less compelling than in other stories where the balance of power was not as skewed.

List of science fiction films of the 1980s

Lovers of superhero novels will enjoy this. And I do hope that Ian keeps writing. He's created an intersting world and characters, if he can avoid losing the story to ever increasing power levels. Audible Audiobook Verified Purchase. At the time of this review I listened to the audiobook version of this. I enjoyed this story because you do get a real deep look at a newly graduated hero entering the career albeit as an intern.

Sure, you do have romance in there, but I think the relationships not just with her lover but with selected characters, really feels genuine and relatable. Mixed in with solid settings and missions Mustang Sally and the Just Cause team goes through and you really have a pretty potent mix of adventure, action and emergence of a new superhero. The villain does leave a lot of unanswered reasons for his deep grudges which I'm guessing will be looked at in later books. One person found this helpful. Here is the book that begins the story of Mustang Sally, the intrepid speedster who is fighting to become a part of the preeminent team of supers, Just Cause - a team with family attachments for Sally.

The author does an excellent job setting up the details of the Just Cause Universe, trickling little bits of information here and there rather than setting up whole chapters of history. We come to realize that this is OUR world, but with changes. It feels real because it is. All Healy has done here is slip the existence of super-powered beings into the line, and he does it in a way that is not patronizing or insulting. We follow Sally through the trials and tribulations of proving herself to an established group - a task to which any worker can relate.
