As guests entered the building and enjoyed breakfast, a photo show was displayed on a These two forks and their tributaries enriched themselves as they accumulated gold from the outcropping Mother Lode veins, adding this to the extensive amounts of gold they had already garnered from the East Belt veins.

Further complicating the early Tertiary auriferous gravel channels was their additional erosion and cutting by the Miocene river system named by geologists the Valley Springs system and later in the Pliocene epoch by the Mehrten River system. These later stream gravels generally contained gold only where they cut out the Eocene channel deposits. But many of these remnants of Tertiary placers had literally mountains of overburden or, at best, many feet of overlying gravels that were lean in gold values. In this case, to follow the pay streak very close to bedrock, miners had to drift in from the outcrop.

A shaft mine had to be pumped to keep the workings free of water. In some cases it was necessary to drive long crosscut tunnels instead of a shaft to reach a buried channel. Once into the channel, drifts and crosscuts explored and developed the gravel. This was all handwork, mostly by pick and shovel, far more expensive than surface placering. Within three years the San Andreas area had more than eighty drift gravel mines. Initially developed by shallow shafts on the south side of the ridge, almost in town, it was then reached farther downstream, under Stockton Ridge, by tunnels driven in from upper Chili Gulch.

In the pioneer period, extensive drift mining was concentrated in the San Andreas and Mokelumne region. Development of other Tertiary channel deposits in the county proceeded more slowly because of the more isolated exposures of these gravels and because in many places they either had been totally removed by later erosion or were still buried by thick late-Tertiary cover. All of these early developments did not lead to sustained activity, however. Many of the later operators attempted to work in the intervolcanic channels or in channels that had been reworked by the later Tertiary streams that had disseminated the gold and made the gravel much lower in grade.

Julihn and F. More pragmatic persons doubt that it is feasible any longer to mine the remaining auriferous gravels by underground methods with the present-day labor and environmental constraints. Large amounts of auriferous gravel had a much lower grade, but to mine them inexpensively required removal of enormous amounts of overburden.

Here versatile Major Case introduced this method on his claim at the point where the Stockton Ridge channel entered the ridge on the southwest edge of town.
