The two engage in an argument over who is responsible for the current state of affairs. Identity emerges as an important theme in this section of the novel. The ways in which a society tries to define a person are often at odds with the way that individual defines him- or herself. As the community reinterprets the scarlet letter, Hester once again has an identity thrust upon her by her fellow townspeople.

The meaning of the letter can vary with the desires and needs of the community, because the letter does not signify any essential truth in itself. Like the meteor in Chapter 12, it simply serves to reinforce popular opinion. Yet, because Puritan doctrine elevated faith and predestination over good works, no amount of good deeds can counteract sin; one must be ranked among the chosen.

Although the community may acknowledge her intentions as good, it will never consider her divinely forgiven, and thus its members cannot forgive her in their own hearts. In the end, this is a society that privileges a pure and untainted soul above an actively good human being. Taken to an extreme, a doctrine that prizes faith over good works may mean that, in terms of everyday life, the pursuit of a transcendent heaven results in a hell on earth. They think that their chosen punishment for her, the scarlet letter, has effectively humbled her as planned.

The scarlet letter has not led her to contemplate her sin and possible salvation. Rather, it has led her to unholy speculations—thoughts of suicide and ruminations about the unfair lot of women. She refused to flee Boston when Pearl was an infant because at the time she did not believe that her fellow men and women should have the power to judge her.

My game was running smoothly when I played Hino's route. It crashed once when I tried to save but that was it. It also ran smoothly when I was playing Isora's route. When I started Toa's route that is when problems started. It crashed during the prologue for no apparent reason.

It has also crashed 3 other times after that and I am still just a little into his route. There is nothing that seems to be triggering it really. It could be when it is changing backgrounds sometimes? But I am unsure. Is anyone else experiencing this? I started saving fairly often since it has crashed 4 times in the past hour or so and it doesn't let me skip after the crash either.

It acts like I didn't read anything after my last save point. It is starting to get kind of annoying.

And it seems to crash sometimes when saving or just at random times, might be a bug in the game that is making it crash randomly like maybe an error in the coding that the game has trouble reading, i have also just left the game running for a few hours without doing anything to see if it would just crash and it never did until i started reading a few scenes and then would just crash, if it is an error with the game and not my pc then i hope it's fixed soon.

I see. That sucks. I know for sure it isn't something with my computer. It also has nothing to do with background programs because the only thing I have had up while playing was steam. It definitely seems to be a coding issue.

For me it happens when just playing the game normally and then it all of a sudden just closes. The save crash only happened to me once. I have also had a crash where the sounds and game seems to be working but when I click to continue to the next lines of dialogue it won't do anything like it is frozen, which makes me have to close the game and restart it. Crashing issues were supposedly one of the reasons why they delayed the game so much so it sucks that the game still has these issues to this extent after they said they were delaying to make sure it ran well.

Glitter View Profile View Posts. I was able to go through Hino's entire good route before running into problems. When I started reloading past saves to get the other endings and skipping the things I've read, the game would freeze, sometimes crash.

    7. A lot of the time I have to restart my pc just to get it to close. I started a new game to play Isora's route and have been skipping the read parts in the general route. It has froze twice so far, so I've been saving after and before each choice Thankfully no problems when saving or loading so far, but I'm scared to skip through stuff now! It seems to be crashing more and more the more I play. I took a break then loaded it up again and it has crashed 3 times in the past half hour. I am also saving at every choice.

    If there is a lot of dialogue between choices then I save before the next choice too.
