Updated from Bizet's ancient Ceylon to an unspecified Asian locale during the modern times, this production of The Pearl Fishers brings a thin storyline together, supported by an all-star cast and the Met's trademark splendour. Nadir and Zurga, friends since childhood, renew their pledge to keep their distance from the Priestess Leila, whom they both love. Village politics, tsunami and fire ensue, and of course, one of the men gets the girl.

The crowd proceeds to tear the Brahmin in pieces. Padmavati sees in this act of sacrilege an evil omen. The people run to arms. The army has been defeated. Alaouddin grants a truce, until the evening, when Padmavati must be handed over. Ratan-sen implores her to surrender herself, but rather than that he should have this sin on his conscience, she stabs him.

In accordance with custom, Padmavati must be cremated alive with the dead body of her husband. The final scene is set in the temple at the entrance to the crypt where burns the fire. Padmavati's funeral procession approaches.

The priests invoke the spirits of evil. Four white and two black girls appear, Kali and Dourga, and attempt to seduce Padmavati from her duty. She refuses, and they are transformed into the beneficient holy Apsares. Padmavati, glorified and triumphant, descends into the crypt, at the moment when Alaouddin appears at the door of the temple and watches the flames rising up from the burning pyre.

Opera Screening at the Arts Station - Les Pecheurs de Perles

Roussel — belonged to no recognized school of composition. The work, given its premiere in , is a dark, shadowy invocation of thirteenth-century India. The libretto, by orientalist Louis Laloy, drew from the composer music of misty Impressionism; the drama is set against a background of war, which leads to the heroine's stabbing of her husband and her own redemptive suicide. The idea paid off for a majority of the audience, and a packed house on March 18 warmly applauded the colorful show: For animal-lovers, there were a real elephant — on which seventy-five-year-old baritone Alain Fondary made his precarious entrance — a terrified-looking tiger and at one point a serpent.

Obviously, Leela Bhansali's knowledge of opera is limited: It was, however, a real pleasure to hear the score so lovingly conducted by Lawrence Foster, who drew warm French colors from the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. It was in the pit, rather than on the stage, that the magic of Roussel's work was best realized.

This mezzo is a frustrating artist who alternates phrases of real distinction with outbursts of hollow unsteadiness and musical clumsiness. It must be admitted that it was difficult for the singer to compete dramatically with the beauties of the cavorting dancers. The best singing of the evening came from the Brahmane, Yann Beuron, whose tenor sounds increasingly assured.

Although it was good to see Fondary back onstage in the capital, the role of Alaouddin is beyond his now unstable vocal production. This is partly the fault of the composer, but some of the blame rests with the production, which needed less bling and more substance.

Last edited by TopoGigio on Tue Dec 09, To begin with, Roussel, again like Ravel, was unusually upset by what he called the false patriotism and "impertinence of the litterati " particularly with respect to "nationalist" attacks on German music. There are leagues against pornography, against the abuse of tobacco, against all sorts of things, some of them innocent enough.

Could one not be launched against the ignorance and idiocy of writers? It may indeed be said that if the war has uplifted the soul and strengthened the characters of those who take part in it, it has sadly exposed the vices and petty nastiness of those who do not. How happy I am to think that music has the power to transport you out of every-day existence and to lead you back to hope, to love of life, to everything within us that is great, beautiful and superhuman. Yes indeed, music, with poetry, and perhaps even more than poetry, is the supreme art, for it has the power of transfiguration, and speaks to those who love, and to those who, in the words of Saint Augustine, "love to love".

And love is the mainspring of the universe. You will think that myu letter is very lyrical and high-flown, but, you see, the life that we lead here eventually inculcates a very special mental outlook. You are constantly coming up against the crudest matter-of-factness and the most amazing idealism when you have learned how to separate it from the circumstantial detail. You live by an almost complete materialism and you suddenly notice at your side naked heroism and words and acts whose antique grandeur is awe-inspiring. Then, when you reflect a little and when you remain, as I do, a little apart in order to have the freedom of personal vision, you feel, rising up and growing within you, a great wave of idealism which will be for many the main benefit of this horrible war and which will outlast it, we must hope.

All these forces which the war has unleashed will combine and will be condensed in the works of peace and in every manifestation of artistic thought.

Description

There will be fine days again, my darling, and radiant springs for those whose hearts are still young and who can express their feelings, and I know that you are too valiant, too "tempered", not to bear courageously the weeks of cruel separation which are wounding us both. All that [their life before the war] will belong to pre-war things, that is to say to things which will be separated from us by a wall, a veritable wall It will be necessary to begin living all over again, with a new conception of life; this is not to say that all that was done before the war will be forgotten, but rather that everything done subsequently will be done in a different way.

I was thinking about this yesterday and wondering whether I ought not to fear the new attitude of mind which will result from the present crisis, with reference to Padmavati, conceived and composed in its entirety before the war. All things considered, I do not think so. I cannot see in my work any traces of morbid or deliquescent influences. On the contrary, it seems to me that the general tone is virile and strong and that it will be able to survive the test of two or three years' delay and what years!
