In the XIII and XIV centuries, the Russian land was divided between many rulers, princes, who independently controlled their principalities or domains.

Tver offered little resistance and meekly yielded to Moscow in Ryazan and Pskov alone retained their independence at the cost of abject subservience to their virtual suzerain.
