John rated it really liked it Aug 10, What I found so useful and complete about "Taking Over" was the multi-dimensional aspect of this work - ie: And coming with the credibility of an author who has lived it himself. For myself, as the President of a 4th Generation family business this book resonates. This book is an exceptional read with straight talk.

It sticks to the fundamentals of maintaining a successful family business. The "lesson's learned" in every chapter allow for one to go back and quickly refresh. The author expresses himself in a clear and concise way.

This book should serve as a primar for any family business with the desire to make the succession process work for them. I am going to give this book to several friends who might benefit from such sage advice. The book is a beautifully written and well thought through pattern of experiences, from which you can glean advice. The author is meticulous and shares the particular highs and lows of an entrpreneurial business, that is small, yet functions internationally, and does so with success.

I met the author at a recent conference, and heard him speak, and decided to buy and read his book. I am CEO of a family business, and went through "Taking Over" myself, and found many interesting insights and tips that hit home for me.

The author has a style that makes this a very readable book. There is a nice balance of self-revelation and lessons learned, along with stories of others' experiences. The tips aren't earth-shaking news, but good fundamentals. To outsiders or rookies in family businesses, transitions seem like they shouldn't be that complicated - but they are, as they combine business rationale with family emotions and dynamics.
