Washington accomplished this difficult and hazardous task with distinction and valor. On his return home he was commissioned as a Lieutenant-Colonel in a volunteer regiment and was handed two companies of regular troops. He was then ordered to disperse a combined force of French and Indian troops ensconced in Virginia. The mounting threat from the French and their Indian allies was instrumental in General Braddock being sent to Virginia to oversee a campaign against them.

When the general arrived, he promptly appointed Washington a member of his staff with the rank of Colonel. It was an appointment that was soon justified. Braddock's regular troops had become demoralized under fire from a well trained and equipped enemy: At this point Washington's quiet, relaxed and almost detached demeanor gave place to the cool and determined action of a leader of men.

After a moment of reflection he mounted his horse and spurred his way to every part of the battlefront. In full view of the enemy, and with bullets whining around him, he quelled a rising panic, organized covering fire, and withdrew the Virginians in such good array that a panic-stricken retreat became an orderly retirement.

According to Reginald Cox: At the age of only 23 he was appointed commander of Virginia's armed forces, a post he held with distinction until when he resigned his commission to take up the life of a gentleman farmer on the Mount Vernon estate he had inherited from his brother. In the following year he married a young widow who also owned extensive property.

This resulted in Washington becoming possibly the most wealthy plantation owner in Virginia. As a result he was free of financial worries and able to enter fully into the public life of his community and, eventually, of the young nation. For a while he was content to contribute his well-balanced intellect to rational debate or friendly discussion. But it soon became increasingly evident to those close to him that Washington was developing a reality of the political future of the young nation which was way in advance of that of almost all of his contemporaries.

Because of his even temper and the logical and impersonal way he presented arguments, Washington evidently made no political enemies. However, under the ever increasing restrictions placed by the British Crown on the commercial and political life of the American colonies, there was a distinct limit to his patience and forebearance. It soon became clear to the Congress that Washington believed the Colonies would be driven to resist injustice with force and he was successful in persuading Congress to prepare for organized military resistance.

At a second Congress called in March , Colonel Washington he appeared at every session in uniform found himself being consulted on every military issue which arose. A skirmish occurred between American militia and British troops on April 17, in the Massachusetts village of Concord; and this is said to have inaugurated the American War of Independence. The first real battle of the war was staged two days later at Lexington. Congress immediately came to the conclusion that the colonists must be organized for defense.

On June 15, , George Washington was asked to assume the office of commander-in-chief of the United Colonies. The lowest tide of misfortune was reached in the bitter winter of After the American defeats at the battles of the Brandywine and Germantown, and the subsequent British occupation of Philadelphia, General George Washington led his ragtag and war-torn army of 11, men into a valley by the Schuylkill River known as Valley Forge.

Here, during the winter months, Washington's troops rested and retrained under the astute guidance of General von Steuben.

Washington chose Valley Forge for his winter quarters because it was defensible and strategically located to enable him to protect Congress which was then meeting in York, Pennsylvania from a surprise British attack. Unfortunately, a lack of supplies and the barrenness of the surrounding countryside made life miserable for the Continental Army.

They went through this winter without adequate shelter, food, or clothing, and had to live in huts built by their own hands. The death toll from starvation and cold was great; and at no time were more than half of Washington's army fit for active service. Throughout these trying and difficult months, General Washington was observed many times disappearing into a thicket not far from his quarters where, on his knees, he beseeched the Eternal God for guidance and strength.

On one particularly cold day Washington remained in his quarters longer than usual -- almost the entire afternoon -- and when he finally emerged he appeared to be weighed down by more than the usual trials of his command. Returning after dusk, Washington summoned an officer who was in attendance, and related to him a most incredible story. This story was first published in The National Tribune -- a paper read by American war veterans -- in December, This paper is now known as The Stars and Stripes. The story was reprinted again in The Stars and Stripes on December 21, The story, as told to publisher Wesley Bradshaw, is as follows: He was then 99 years old, and becoming very feeble.

But though so old, his dimming eyes rekindled as he gazed upon Independence Hall, which he had come to visit once more. Mark the prediction, you will see it verified. The darkest period we had, I think, was when Washington after several reverses, retreated to Valley Forge, where he resolved to pass the winter of I have often seen the tears coursing down our dear commander's careworn cheeks, as he would be conversing with a confidential officer about the condition of his poor soldiers.
