We just discovered a great one for Variation B. Some of the parents made up words of their own.

THE ORCHESTRA

One little boy loved Buzz Lightyear, so Var. C became Buzz Lightyear Buzz Lightyear. Another girl liked Barbie, so Var. B became Barbie Shh Pop. Some parents continued making up words for the later songs too; one even did the whole of Perpetual Motion with words about My Little Ponies! Create Sound Investments and Futures. Within the English language, it seems you can find just about anything that fits Variations A or D. C is trickier but still possible. They exist, but harder to come up with!

Unfortunately in piano, the long note is a sustained one, not short. So we need a three syllable phrase with a natural attack i. So as you can see, nothing so far seems ideal for the piano version of Variation B! Any other suggestions?

    revised by William C. Schoenfeld

Eating well—or not—just like practicing well or not, is learned behavior. For the concert hall, he invented a distinctive and immediately identifiable idiom with the poetically-named Rhapsody in Blue and Piano Concerto in F Almost every one of his concert works has entered the repertory, and, just as important, the American psyche.

In that regard, he is the American equivalent of Verdi. People with no interest in opera hum parts of his Porgy and Bess without knowing where the material comes from or even that it's part of something larger. He showed an absolute passion to improve his work. He managed to travel a great artistic distance from the relatively simple tunes of Rhapsody in Blue to the great formal resource of American in Paris , Cuban Overture , and many scenes in Porgy and Bess.

    Recent Gershwin releases

Much has been made of his debt to African-American music, and it is indeed a major source of his inspiration, but it's not the only one. Igor Stravinsky , Claude Debussy , Piotr Tchaikovsky , and even Jewish chant also contribute to his paradoxically quite original music.

Zez Confrey got a section of all his own in the concert as composer and pianist, and here his place is taken by Dick Hyman who gives an outrageously exuberant version of Kitten on the Keys. Some doubt exists over what precisely came next in the concert, but for this recording Hyman gives a beautifully tranquil, flowing performance of three Little Oddities before rounding this section off with the flamboyant Nickel in the Slot , which marvellously imitates the sound of a coin-operated player-piano.

Hyman ends his slot with a medley of pieces by Irving Berlin. Nobody with an interest in Gershwin should be without this version, presented with both authority and aplomb — and with Walt Levinsky doing things with that notorious clarinet solo few others have dared. Although based on earlier piano pieces, Gershwin shows a remarkable sensitivity towards the instrument and its possibilities. Charles Castleman and Randall Hodgkinson present a compelling case for this little-heard gem.

Peress, whose empathy with the musical idiom and style of Gershwin informs every moment of this release, directs his own impressive orchestration of the Strike up the Band Overture. We are currently offering in excess of 52, reviews. Donate and keep us afloat.
