It takes place on the tenth day of the Jewish month of Tishrei, and is considered the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. God commands the Israelites to observe Yom Kippur the Day of Atonement in two scriptural locations: Leviticus 16 and Leviticus ; the first is a detailed description, and the latter is a more concise list of commands.
