Boy to manBy sandraeellsA great classic, by a great writer, about a young Anglo-Indianboy's journey from youth to manhood.

I appreciate the spiritualovertones and cultural validity. In my reading of this and adifferent book, I am learning about old and modern India. The story follows a young boy named Kimwho is the orphan son of an Irish soldier and poor white woman whohave both died in poverty.

Although Kim is white, he is seen as anyother young Indian boy and spends his days begging and runningsmall errands around the busy streets of Lahore. The novel isnotable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, andvaried religions of India. Kim O'Hara, the orphaned son of an Irishsoldier stationed in India, is neither innocent nor victimized. Raised by an opium-addicted half-caste woman since his equallydissolute father's death, the boy has grown up in the streets ofLahore: Though he was burned black as any native; though he spokethe vernacular by preference, and his mother-tongue in a clippeduncertain sing-song; though he consorted on terms of perfectequality with the small boys of the bazar; Kim was white--a poorwhite of the very poorest.

From his father and the woman who raisedhim, Kim has come to believe that a great destiny awaits him. Thedetails, however, are a bit fuzzy, consisting as they do of thewoman's addled prophecies of "'a great Red Bull on a green field, and the Colonel riding on his tall horse, yes, and'--dropping intoEnglish--'nine hundred devils.
