Hmm… hard to say! I think Treasure Island is a more exciting adventure — or at least faster moving. But this one has more depth. I read it a few years ago and remember really enjoying it, particularly the fascinating relationship between the two brothers. It is! But this one has the adventure and a lot more besides… thoroughly enjoyed it!

This one sounds like a winner! I can tell from your excellent review that you enjoyed it lots, and I think I would, too. Sibling rivalry is a good hook to hang a theme on. Must check to see if I can find a copy, drat! I did! I always like adventure stories and I love well written historical fiction… and then of course there were the pirates! But the characterisation in this one was particularly good too — all round, excellent! If you do get a chance to read it, I hope you enjoy it!

Great review. Sounds a rip roaring story and the conflict between the brothers would make it even more interesting. Thank you! What an a amazing review i really enjoy reading it I never got to read a scot novel, but thanks to you am discovering quite a lot. Thank you very much — glad you enjoyed it! When I read a thriller written nowadays, I find the attempts at humour rather pathetic…. The older authors tended to have, not exactly an omniscient narrator, but a storyteller who could poke fun at the characters from a bit of a distance.

I then read it again as an adult and sound there was a lot more to it than adventure , the morality issue for example. Squire Trelawney and the docto ar motivated by greed you could say just as much as Silver.

BE THE FIRST TO KNOW

Part of what I love about him is that you can read his books as child and adult and find different things in them. And Treasure Island of course — yo-ho-ho! Duels, smugglers and plots, love and hate, loyalty and betrayal; and a pirate ship… this is definitely going on my TBR list!! You are commenting using your WordPress. Which one is really good and which one is really evil? This specific edition is from perfect year for Sean Connery and Oliver Reed to play the siblings and is large type for those who need extra help. If you don't need the extra help for the eyes, it's kinda weird, but perfect really because this baby will knock about your bag and car and bus and will wind up very well-thumbed. I'd like a leather-bound edition, just so I can watch it sitting on my shelf.

All this riot of color is kept expertly under control, throughout most of the novel, by the dry, methodical prose of the chief narrator, the steward Ephraim Mackellar, through whose unreliably partisan eyes we see most of the events of the novel. For long stretches, in between the action scenes, the novel is a kind of chamber piece, charting the changing relationships between a tight family knot of characters: the brothers, Henry and James the Master of the title ; their father, the old laird, unwitting cause of their rivalry through his favoritism; Allison Graeme, their cousin, who loves James and married Henry; and Mackellar himself.

Although our attention is directed principally towards the depicted characters, the romantic, doomed Durie family, Mackellar himself is pivotal to the effect of the novel. Despite the prissy, old maidish elements in his characterization, he is far from lacking in passion, as his fierce devotion to the put-upon Henry Durie shows.

In order to avoid spoilers, I will stop my review here. For those interested in reading a biography about the author, there are at least two interesting books on this subject: Fanny Stevenson: A Romance of Destiny by Alexandra Lapierre and Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan, see my review here. However, it should be noticed that both books are fictionalized biographies. For a complete list of RLS's biographies, please visit the author's website. The Jacobite Trilogy by D.
