If Darcy wants to help them, they have to leave for Yorkshire immediately. Elizabeth claims to know Sir Anthony, too — but by a different name. What game is his old friend playing? And is it dangerous? If she can just manage to keep her temper, she may be able to rescue her uncle from financial ruin. But being trapped there for days — and nights — with an injured and confused Mr.

Darcy who keeps saying the oddest things about her, is even worse. At least he possesses the useful ability of lighting a fire to keep them from freezing to death. A Pemberley Variations Novella. Elizabeth Bennet longs to see the view from the famous Black Rocks in Derbyshire, but her aunt and uncle refuse to allow her to climb to the highest rock outcroppings alone.

Darcy — at least until he offers to escort her to the top. But unbeknownst to her, the Black Rocks have a very special meaning for him. Please note that this story is a novella, not a full-length novel. Why should he care if his staid cousin Darcy disapproves?

After a midnight rescue, clandestine meetings, a long-lost son, conspiracies, blackmail, and an attempted elopement, everyone can agree that this house party is anything but dull. Trapped for three days by a flood, and trapped forever by society because of it…. It is a proverbial dark and stormy night when Mr.

Darcy proposes to Elizabeth Bennet in the most insulting manner. Just as she begins her famous refusal, a crack of thunder presages the pounding at the door as the residents of the flooded village of Hunsford seek refuge from the storm at the parsonage atop the hill. Even worse, the flood has washed out the only bridge leading to Rosings Park, leaving Darcy stranded with Elizabeth at the parsonage.

If anyone ever discovered that Miss Elizabeth Bennet had received a letter from a single gentleman, she could be ruined… or forced to marry a man she detests.

Before Darcy leaves the Lambton Inn after learning the scandalous news about Lydia and Wickham, he and Elizabeth declare their true feelings. Determined to give Darcy up rather than drag his name through the mud, Elizabeth will have to choose between what is right, and what she wants more than anything…. What if… The last man in the world she could be prevailed upon to marry…is her husband?

He had no control over his thoughts or actions and actually, I felt he was kind of rapey at times. I mean, Lizzie never said no, but I was way uncomfortable with him kissing her the first time, especially when her thought was she was disappointed because she wanted her first kiss to be with her husband and they weren't even engaged and she didn't want to be married to him.

And I suppose the author thought it was ok because everyone knows Darcy and LIzzie will end up together, but I am not ok with that.

See a Problem?

And I was definitely not ok with the implicit undertones that Lizzie only married Darcy bc he compromised her sexually, despite the happily ever after. And then the idea that Darcy loses control of his libido and has sex with Lizzie before they are married "accidentally. Keep it in your pants. Not really a spoiler since it's in the description. That was the scene I had to put the book down. It just got too porny and ridiculous. And I flipped through the rest of the book and it was just gooey fluffy lemony fluff.

I guess this book would be good for half-hearted Austen fans who want to read a bodice ripper with slightly familiar characters. I mean a good idea in theory, but quite poor execution. Whole lot of spoilers Two stars say that the book was ok, which is a good summary of my feelings. I was very very very worried about the what if that starts this book, because that usually means that the men decides to pursue the woman he chose until he wores her down and "wins" her.

And yes, that's exactly what this book is about, except that Elizabeth falls for Mr. Darcy because she's pasionately physically attracted to him, so he doesn't look that much of a creepy guy who can't respect a "n Whole lot of spoilers Darcy because she's pasionately physically attracted to him, so he doesn't look that much of a creepy guy who can't respect a "no" He thinks about her body so much that I'm surprised he's not walking around with a boner all the time. They basically get aroused just by looking at each other They need each other to be complete, because they are destined to be in love.

Their making-out sessions fill most of the first fourth of the book and it all gets so repetitive, that after some time, I just skimmed through it to get to the story again. They are so absolutely passionately in love that they actually have sex before their wedding and they have to be married within two days after that, because suddenly Mr.

Darcy remembers what's proper He behaves like a control freak whole lot of time, which is explained by his absolute love for Elizabeth. It reminded me a lot of Fifty Shades, which is not a compliment. Darcy also has bunch of emotional issues from the past, just like Christian Gray does. And while Elizabeth often reminds herself that she needs her independence in a marriage, she excuses a lot with his emotinal wounds and bla bla She has a child at the end of the book, which btw is a completely pointless part of the book and it would be better without it.

Darcy has emotional issues about that too and his behavior again reminds me of Christian Gray If she cut all the repetitive erotic scenes and whole lot of pointless repetitive flirting "dialogs", it would have much better pace. Oh and most of Darcy's "penis talk". The way it is, it gets exhausting and boring. Oh and I don't mind if you turn Pride and Prejudice into a mild erotica, but it was so out of character!

And there is actually a scene when Elizabeth admits to Mrs. Gardiner that her behavior is out of character! But they are passionately attracted to each other so that excuses everything, right?

That was the bad and there was a lot of bad in this story. The good thing is that at least partially the erotic scenes are erotic and enjoyable, if you manage to forget how absolutely out of character it is for both of the main characters. The writing is easy to read and the story follows the original one when it comes to the side characters Jane and Bingley get marries, Lydia runs away with Wickham and Darcy and his money solves it.

And it actually provided reasonable explanation for Wickham and Lydia, because in the original story, I could see why she would do it, but not why he would, when he had good position in military and this ruined it for him. And there were several moments when some awkward or embarassing situations were written so well that I actually laughed out loud: Jun 18, Frances Duncan rated it it was ok.

Did not finish I got about half way through and I couldn't make myself finish, it dragged. The concept is interesting and makes you wonder why Darcy didn't take Bingley back to Netherfield earlier if he was trying to make amends. The story was the same thing over and over - Darcy pushes his interests on Lizzy who gets upset about it I thought romance had moved past this. The histor Did not finish I got about half way through and I couldn't make myself finish, it dragged. The historical inaccuracies were glaring, there is no way they would have been walking by themselves.

The books starts with Colonel Fitzwilliam called Richard as seems to be the general consensus though he's never actually named but then changes perspective several times, mostly it's Darcy or Lizzy but not always. Jul 06, Sabrina rated it it was ok. This was a quick, easy read. I enjoyed the light material between all the heavier or scheduled stuff I am reading for clubs and school.

I only gave it 2 stars because this in no way is realistic to the beloved characters in Austin's work. I did not expect that level but this was a fan fiction of flirty and floozy behaviour that crossed so many lines that Darcy nor Lizzy would cross in public much less during courting. Sep 03, Margaret rated it it was ok.

This is a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, with Mr Darcy trying to woo Elizabeth and convince her to marry him. I thought Abigail Reynolds did a good job with the characters and the basic story telling. However, I just couldn't get into Darcy and Elizabeth and their passionate sex life. Just because she quotes Jane Austen's original doesn't mean she equals Austen for wit and plot and humor. After sulking around London for several months after his rejection be Elizabeth Bennet, Colonel Fitzwilliam persuades Darcy to try again.

So after confessing to Bingley his part in the separation of him and Jane Bennet they go back to Netherfield, with Georgiana Darcy. Not interesting enough for me, and too much 'mature content' to be bored with. Jul 09, Rhonda rated it it was ok Shelves: For the most part, this book is enjoyable, but I'm not sure I buy this variation of events when I think of the Pride and Prejudice world. All the characters arevacting out of character. I won't lie, at first I was quite excited. I could finally see Darcy and Elizabeth getting sexy on each other. But then it was just too much.

I was glad when I finished. Maybe I'm over this particular genre, or maybe this one just stretched the Austen-inspired events too far, but I only enjoyed a few select moments of this book. The premise is that Darcy, after the failed proposal leaves him heartbroken, nearly gives up on Elizabeth.

He returns to London, but a chance visit from his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, convinces him to follow Elizabeth to Hertfordshire and try more slowly and politely to win her over. He shows a lot of consideration and humble regard for Maybe I'm over this particular genre, or maybe this one just stretched the Austen-inspired events too far, but I only enjoyed a few select moments of this book. He shows a lot of consideration and humble regard for her. He even brings his sister to visit to have a good excuse to take Elizabeth out unchaperoned.

Elizabeth is a bit put out to be questioning her own feelings, but as the little moments of privacy and affection turn into scandalous makeout sessions, she is close to accepting his proposal.

Her only reservation is that Darcy is a bit pushy and needy, which is fair because I thought that about him as well. The neighbours and servants start to gossip, they have to announce their engagement before she is ready, and the Bennets spend a whole chapter scratching their heads at it. Darcy invites Elizabeth and the Gardiners to stay at Pemberley on the their trip, where he and Elizabeth share a bed three nights in a row and exclaim a lot about how disappointed they are to have compromised their morals.

This leads to a rushed wedding with some of Darcy's family and the dilemma of when and how to inform the Bennets. At the same time, Lydia runs off with Wickham, and everybody heads to London to fix things up - but really, I stopped reading when a newly married Elizabeth and Darcy discussed carriage sex and decided against it.

I know it's a well-worn trope to have an unmarried couple in a romance novel find any privacy they can, but either have the carriage sex included or portray the stern sexual restrictions of the era. A happy ending later, we find out Darcy is terribly afraid of losing Elizabeth to childbirth, but naturally she's fine and has a son right away. The charm of watching Darcy court Elizabeth openly with all his best consideration on display is not enough. This was an amusing rewriting of Pride and Prejudice, but not something I will ever feel the need to read again.

In general, I don't understand why someone would feel the need to rewrite something as great as Pride and Prejudice, but I thought I would give this book a chance. It picks up right after Elizabeth has rejected Mr. Darcy decides not to give up so easily and heads back to Netherfield with Bingley immediately. There he aggressively courts Elizabeth until she finally realizes This was an amusing rewriting of Pride and Prejudice, but not something I will ever feel the need to read again.

There he aggressively courts Elizabeth until she finally realizes how much she loves him, they get engaged, etc. It was always fun to come across one of those passages. And I also appreciated that the author recognized the openness of Darcy in contrast to the closed character of Elizabeth. However, that is as far as the accuracy of her depiction of the characters went. They were amusing characters, but not so much the characters of Austen's book. My biggest objection to the book was the inclusion of unnecessary not to mention out of character sex scenes.

One of the lines on the back of the book is "Madly in love and mutually on fire, their passion anticipates their wedding," which, frankly, I find a highly amusing sentence and think could be a summary of the book. I guess I should have known it was going to be more of a romance novel than anything else otherwise why bother rewriting the book. I was mostly bothered that Elizabeth only seems to fall in love with Darcy because of physical attraction. She can't stand him, but she likes it when he kisses her. Basically, as a romance novel, it wasn't a bad book.

The characters and plot were very entertaining. Fans of period romance novels may like it, but Austen fans probably won't. Oct 22, K. I've read quite a few of Abigail Reynolds' Austen alternatives before, and while they're all pretty damned cheesy, this one was just awful. But not the kind of awful where you want to stop reading and throw the book across the room.

Just the kind of awful where you're invested in the story, but only just. The gist of it is that after proposing to Lizzy at Hunsford and being rejected, Colonel Fitzwilliam I've read quite a few of Abigail Reynolds' Austen alternatives before, and while they're all pretty damned cheesy, this one was just awful.
