She also displays a great sense of humor on occasion. What kept me from a page-turning read is the minutiae involved in setting up the crime and crime scene. The loser characters were not those you wanted to root for, but they received detailed backgrounds for the first few chapters in the book. The plot twists, bad characters who turned out to be good characters, were written with authenticity. The main villain's unmasking was not that well developed though his relationship uncovered on the last few pages was believable. KIRKUS REVIEW

I read "Cool in Tucson" several years ago, liked it and was looking forward to a sequel, so when I saw "New River Blues" I was prepared for a good read. Instead I found characters that would be incomprehensible if I hadn't read the first book and a slow moving, not too believable plot.

Dec 04, Kristen rated it really liked it Shelves: I picked this up because of its setting in Tucson. I'm usually not a fan of mysteries that jump around to different perspectives, but Gunn does this very well. Her main character of the only female homicide detective in Tucson is likeable and believeable. There are a number of good story threads that pull you through and make you want to read the next one. Apr 28, Lucy rated it really liked it Shelves: Second book in this series set in Tucson. Two people are dead after a big party in a high-dollar neighborhood. Lots of interesting characters, but too much time spent with some low-lifes.

Sarah's personal life is complicated and interesting, involving a new policeman boyfriend, her mother, and her niece, as well as her ne'er-do-well sister. Mar 28, Pam rated it liked it. I enjoyed the first book in this series a bit more than this one. The writing and plot in the first seemed a bit tighter, but still an enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Sarah Burke - Book Series In Order

Feb 08, Shirley rated it really liked it Shelves: This is the second, and last, at least for now, in this series with Sarah Burke, the Tucson police detective as the main character. Living so near Tucson, that adds a lot of enjoyment, but, as I noted with the first in the series, the plot and character development is also excellent. Dec 20, Sue rated it liked it.

A good follow-up to her first Sarah Burke mystery. The resolution comes late and unexpectedly. May 17, Brenda rated it liked it. Not the best writing but a competent police procedural if that is what you are looking for. Relevant in terms of content as the woes of contractors in a serious economic downturn takes center stage. Jul 07, Rita rated it liked it. Meanwhile, her niece Denny manages to escape with a sack full of money that her kidnapper had somehow misplaced.

The second novel of the Sarah Burke series sees Burke get a second case that is just as mystifying as the first.

New River Blues

After a night of drugs, drinking and toy boy debauchery, wealthy cougar Eloise Henderson and her newfound young boyfriend get their heads bashed in. The Chief makes Sarah lead detective in the double homicide. Unfortunately, for Sarah, Roger has a watertight alibi — he had spent the entire night in Phoenix with an escort. There is nothing to suggest that the Ding on his vehicle, which he got on the way back, is anything but genuine.

Her home life is just as chaotic as ever as her niece Denny is ever more suspicious and moody, her sister is back into her life, and her new boyfriend is recovering from several on the job injuries. Eventually she manages to resolve the Burke family issues and unravel the Henderson double homicide crime mystery.

Gunn manages to weave a story of devotion and care for family and society in this heartwarming yet thrilling tale of one detective that gives all for what she believes in.
