Edmund Gosse has a few titles at Gutenberg as well, so I'll try his novels at some point, thanks to the two poems he contributed to this number. All of the writing here was pretty tame compared to any average modern day literature, but I might have seen it all differently back in ! Meanwhile, I am looking forward to reading the one other issue that Gutenberg has available. Someday after my trip, of course.

Apr 03, Book Wyrm rated it liked it Shelves: time-of-top-hats. If there's a theme running throughout this volume, it's 'Don't bother getting married'. From abandoned lovers, hopes and dreams marred by ill suited couples or a life of lonliness arising from a love unrequited, this first quarterly of the Yellow Book is hideously miserable. Wives are selfish, husbands are cruel, loneliness prevails, Jesus bloody Christ. Of the less anguished tales or essays, there's Beerbohm's startling text on cosmetics, advising women they are beautiful, delicate thinkers and should therefore spend their time lounging in chairs and speaking interesting truths, lest their make-up get smudged by more vigourous activity that's not hyperbole, that's literally what he's suggesting. There's a long essay on literary criticism, decrying realism or wishy washy fantasy, and the arguments are amusingly laughable today, the academic version of a man screaming in the high street about the evils of gay marriage or women wearing trousers.

The tale of the boy and his white mice is quaintly enjoyable, and could be read as a metaphor for the above mentioned morbid marriage view; as does the very first tale, Death of the Lion where an obbsessive fan slowly sabotages his idol's chances of romance or happiness.

Overall, with a couple of gems smattered here and there, The Yellow Book is so far proving to be a depressing chore to get through. Hopefully things will improve by Vol 2, or at least cheer the hell up. Feb 09, Teal rated it really liked it. I read the short story "A Responsibility" by Harland in this volume.

I thoroughly enjoyed the piece especially the language. I found his scientific prose to be an interesting take on understanding people, and became interested in the subtle use of scientific observation and physiognomy displayed in the story. Since it was published in the Yellow Book, the homosexual undertones become much more overt.

Overall an easy and lovely read. Painful to get through.
