As the eldest son, Paljor no doubt felt pressured to provide for his family, which was struggling to make ends meet at their modest farm. Tashi Angmo, with her son's possessions. So when he was selected to join an elite group of climbers who would undertake a risky but grandiose mission — to become the first Indians ever to summit Everest from its north side — he chose not to reveal his true destination to her.

She implored her son not to go, but he told her he had to. A certificate marking Paljor's ascent. But younger brother Thinley Namgyal was not worried. His brother was the strongest person he knew. Thinley, who is a monk, met Paljor in Delhi days before he was due to leave; he gave his brother a blessing before telling him goodbye. He was really happy about all of this. Paljor was young, strong and experienced, but Everest presents multitudes of ways to take the life of even the most well prepared climber — falls, avalanches, exposure and more.

The body also baulks at the insults it endures on the mountain. Sudden death — from heart attacks, strokes, irregular heart beat, asthma or exacerbation of other pre-existing conditions — is not uncommon, and lack of oxygen can trigger acute pulmonary or cerebral edema: life-threatening conditions that occur when blood vessels begin leaking fluid into the lungs or brain. Documentation for Paljor: resident of Sakti, climber, no children - from the files of Elizabeth Hawley.

Not everyone on the mountain shares the same odds of dying under any given circumstance, however. In a retrospective study of climbing deaths on Everest from to , Paul Firth , an anesthesiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and his colleagues found that most Sherpa deaths occur at lower altitudes, reflecting the unavoidable risk of traversing the Khumbu icefall — an unstable glacier field laden with house-sized ice blocks and gaping crevasses.

A medal awarded after Paljor's death. When Mark Jenkins , a journalist, author and adventurer in Wyoming, was on Everest in , five people died on a single day. Sherpas he interviewed told him that most of the fatalities belonged to clients who had refused to turn around. Viesturs, who once ended a climb on Everest within m ft of the summit because conditions did not look good, credits his survival to always listening to the mountain and knowing when to turn back.

Jenkins estimates that half the climbers on Everest today do not belong there. Files of expeditions, kept by Elizabeth Hawley. On Everest, things were proceeding without a hitch for Paljor and his comrades. The Indian expedition was well connected on the mountain, with a luxurious communal tent that all climbers, regardless of nationality, were welcome to visit. Mohinder Singh and his wife at their home outside of San Francisco. For his strength and enthusiasm, Singh selected Paljor to be part of the first summit attack team, along with climbing partners Tsewang Smanla and Dorje Morup, and deputy leader Harbhajan Singh.

The problems started on the morning of 10 May, when the team was delayed by strong wind and then overslept. They did not set out from Camp VI until , rather than as planned. Given the extremely tardy start, they decided to move further up the mountain to fix ropes rather than attempt the summit, since doing so would guarantee descending through the Death Zone in the dark — the area above 8,m where climbers often lose their lives. Harbhajan Singh, deputy team leader, and the only survivor of the expedition. By , the team had made significant progress, but the wind had begun to pick up again.

Singh had given the team strict orders to turn around at , or at the latest. Harbhajan Singh, however, was lagging far behind the three Ladakhi men. When he signaled for them to stop and return to camp, they either did not see him or ignored him. At last, at that afternoon, an anxious Singh, awaiting news from Advanced Base Camp, heard his walkie-talkie sputter to life. It was Smanla. Smanla was not to be dissuaded, however, and pointed out that the summit was less than an hour away and that all three men felt fit.

Please come down. The sun is going to set. Smanla shrugged off the warnings, and put Paljor on the phone. But just then, the radio cut off. A flood of relief and excitement washed over him as Smanla announced that he, Paljor and Morup were standing on the summit. Celebrations immediately ensued, both at home and at camp. The men had just set a record for their country.

Whether Paljor and his teammates actually summited, however, was later called into question. Krakauer and others suspect that the men unintentionally stopped m ft short of the peak, believing — due to increasingly bad weather and the mental haze of high altitude — that they had reached the top.

Despite the uncertainty, however, they are credited with the ascent, as the trophies Tashi Angmo later received on behalf of her dead son attest. Hitagi is a beautiful girl with long purple hair dark brown in the novels and blue eyes. She has a glamorous figure, although she is also considered a "frail" girl due to her lack of participation in school activities.

She wears the Naoetsu Private High School uniform the usual way while wearing black thigh-highs and can be seen wearing dresses or similar clothing that cover up to her knees. In later events, she has the sleeves of her uniform rolled up and pinned in place, turning her uniform into a sleeveless blouse and has short hair. Hitagi possesses a sharp tongue and can be blunt while still maintaining a straight face when speaking to others.

This trait of hers makes interacting with her a challenging task, if not impossible, and is something that Araragi discovers first-hand. In spite of this, she is sincere in everything that she says. She calls herself a tsundere but she is more of an kuudere and probably has some understanding of otaku culture, as she once mentiones how "moe" Meme's name was to Araragi. For the three years of high school, Hitagi is in the same class as Koyomi, although she has rarely spoken with anyone for that time.

Likewise, Tsubasa Hanekawa knows little of Hitagi's current state, only judging her from what she knew back in middle school. According to Tsubasa, Hitagi was an overachiever in middle school - she was friendly towards others and excelled in both academics and sports as a varsity track and field athlete. She was also wealthy, as her father was famous in a certain foreign corporation and she lived in a mansion.

Despite this, she retained a sense of humility.

Her seemingly perfect personality granted her the admiration of her classmates and teachers. When she was in the first year of high school, she encountered a mysterious crab, after which she became weightless. Ever since, she has avoided contact with everyone else, and she threatens everyone who discovers that secret [1] of hers, including her friend Suruga Kanbaru.

Hitagi reveals that she had a close brush with death when a disease threatened her life, barely surviving the ordeal through an extensive surgery. What happened to her caused her mother to seek refuge in a cult, which eventually initiated the deterioration of the Senjougahara household. Hitagi's mother lost the family's wealth to the cult, and one of the cult's high-ranking members attempted to rape Hitagi. She protected herself by hitting him with a spiked shoe, causing him serious injury. However, Hitagi's mother took the side of the attacker, abandoning the family and leaving them with a large debt, which Hitagi's father is currently trying to pay back.

In an accident involving a misplaced banana peel, Hitagi falls down the flight of stairs that lead to the upper floors of Naoetsu Private High School and ends up in the arms of Koyomi Araragi , her classmate. Koyomi, in spite of this, declares his intention to help, showing the completely healed wound where Hitagi implanted a staple into his cheek moments earlier. Shocked by Koyomi's immediate recovery, Hitagi decides to accompany him on his trip to the person who might be able to turn her back to normal: an eccentric man named Meme Oshino. She learns from Meme that she was inflicted by an oddity called a Heavy Stone Crab or "god" , who took away her weight in a past encounter with it. Although reluctant to cooperate with Meme, who reminded her of the scammers who once visited her with the same promises of turning back to normal, she agrees to follow Meme's methods, and is even willing to pay , yen for his services.

As advised by Meme, Hitagi changes into a set of clean clothes as part of the ceremony planned by Meme, before returning with Koyomi to Meme's place. Hitagi is then put into a situation where she would recall the memories of her life. Afterwards, the heavy stone crab manifests in front of her, visible only to Hitagi herself. Although the unpredictable behavior of the entity forces Meme to intervene, Hitagi manages to plead to the heavy stone crab to lift its influence from her. The heavy stone crab grants her wish and departs, leaving behind Hitagi with the burdens of her childhood on her shoulders.

She begins to cry while Meme explains her resolution.
