Read reviews that mention played dead vampire who played samantha moon spinoza series body is missing spinoza character rain books young boy dead spinoza another great rain delivers fun read when the read next in the series love the jr rain read the next short story like the story detective mystery dna. I usually enjoy them as long as there are no cliffhangers. Spinoza is back with a new client who needs to find the body of his late alleged biological mother for a DNA test. Problem is the body is not in her grave. While searching for clues Spinoza discovers the late unlamented woman might not be as late as some would wish her to be. It then continues to a predictable end. The story is written in first person, kind of like film noire P.

For those of you who like fully developed concepts and grammar strictly adhered to will find parts of this difficult. However, if you hear a voice in your head as you read then the punctuation makes sense, it gives a rhythm to the story telling. There was now some shallow breathing. Then it came faster. Now we were getting somewhere. If you read the above like it is written with the full stops in your head, it makes for a very good rhythm.

However, if you need the sentence structure to be perfect, then this style will drive you crazy. Also there are a couple of times when tenses changed. I usually don't notice these things, but for some reason in this short story, I was thrown out of the story by a couple of the occurrences. Spinoza is still a recovering alcoholic, trying to deal with the fact that he was responsible for his 9 year old son's death.

He is looking for redemption and not believing he is deserving of it. He is not a happy person. I also keep wondering, how did they get the DNA? Now given all of these minor issues, predictable, editing and a depressed Hero, you might think that I didn't like the story. I enjoyed the story despite it's flaws. I recommend this story unless you have grammar OCD. I feel cheated on this novel. Short storyline with little imagination in the storytelling. An yet I like Spinoza character but wish for more in the storyline and plot set up.

Spinoza needs more changes in his investigation. I don't wish to let down author Rain. She must step up her storytelling and give her reader's something with remembrance. One person found this helpful. This is a fast-paced mystery in J. Spinoza needs to locate a dead body so that the DNA can be matched to her teen heir in order for him to inherit a fortune. Unfortunately, the body is missing from the coffin! Spinoza's investigation leads him to the creepiest places, one of which is inside the very empty coffin as he seeks clues to the body's disappearance.

The flowing, clipped dialogue, the snazzy scene-and-sequel pacing of chapter openings and endings, the inevitable donut quest necessary to solve most crimes, didn't you know? Spinoza uncovers some scary revelations during his investigation, assisted by a cameo from another detective of a connected mystery series. One of my favorite things in this short novel is the snappy dialogue, in the vein of old-school hard-boiled detective stories.

And the ending is stellar, as always. A fast, fun read for a rainy night that will make you hungry for the next in the series. I'm not a fan of vampire books, but I adore J. Perhaps because I was so captivated by Rain's other books I expected too much, but I think a couple of fleshing out chapters might have helped. Definitely an excellent "surprise ending" however! And, I'm ready for my next Knighthorse, please. This is a quick read for any time of the day or night.

Read reviews that mention iron mask vampire in the iron spinoza series really enjoyed main character look forward well written spinoza trilogy rain books must read character development read from jr rain felt like another great love spinoza mask really mask spinoza still a good final book short story. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. We had a tragic hero who couldn't get over the fact that he killed his son.

In " The Vampire Who Played Dead Spinoza Series 2 ", we saw Spinoza having a relationship with Roxi, he still had a lot of angst, but he had his work and he had a small group of people whom he cared for. He was rejoining the human race. For me this series was about character development. Not to mention the vampire thrills However, I feel the ending of this book was a cheat. I realize even with the new knowledge Spinoza would not be the winner for the most psychologically healthy human, however, by using her skill, I felt it kept Spinoza from growing.

In other words it was the difference between being handed a car on your 16th birthday or working hard to purchase your own car. You still have the car, but the emotions are different. As for parts of the story: If Nastassa was so powerful, why would they bring her out every night?

See a Problem?

What did they gain by having her on "stage"? I felt the "bond" between Veronica and Spinoza was a plot necessity without there being any set up for it. Why would they have bonded. He hadn't seen her for two years and just once after she became a vampire. I also began to feel as if there were inconsistencies between the short stories. In "Tatoo", he turned to dust, in "Played Dead" she steamed, in "Iron Mask" they "whisped away" and that was just in the way they died.

In "Tatoo", Veronica changed because of a bite, why didn't Mrs. Perkins change in "Played Dead"? I feel if you are going to create a universe please have be consistent in the laws of the universe. It was still Spinoza's drinking and driving that killed him. Spinoza chose to drink and drive. Destiny didn't make him. I have no problem with his son loving him still and forgiving Spinoza. But that should have been just another rung in Spinoza's character recovery, it shouldn't have shot him up the whole ladder. I enjoyed most of it and it seems a lot of people disagree with my take on the ending and enjoyed it.

However, if you little inconsistencies bother you and new out of the blue abilities do bother you. Personally, I'm going to go back to the Samantha Moon Series, I stopped reading them because of the cliffhangers, but now I have the boxed set and the latest so I'll see if they are as good as I remember.

And so the Spinoza series comes to a conclusion. Right next to The Vampire for Hire series this one is my favorite. These books were just so much fun to read! Rain knows how to tell a good story and how to wrap things up nicely while still leaving room for the future in case he ever wants to revisit these characters. This book was excellent and practially brought tears to my eyes. For the third and final volume in the Spinoza Trilogy Spinoza is hired to look into a person who may be being held against their will at a Medievel Times like place.

Every day for the show someone is wheeled out in a Hannibal Lecter type cage and then wheeled back in and down an elevator. The worker who hired Spinoza has never seen this "actor" before. Nobody knows who it is and nobody seems to want to talk about what may or may not be in the basement. So Spinoza does what he does best and along the way runs into an old friend who he saved in the first book. Together they work to unravel the mystery of the person in the Iron Mask and in the process must face a growing evil yet one question remains.

Is the thing in the Iron Mask there for a reason. Is it good or bad? Read to find out. I love how Mr. Rain throws in characters from other books here and there or mentions them. In each book we either get hear about and see other characters such as Jim Knighthorse, Elvis and even a mention of Samantha Moon.

It's these fun little things along with the awesome stories and his great sense of humor which always keeps me coming back for more. I loved every minute of this book and hope to see Veronica and Natassa in their own series or maybe even show up in the Vampire for Hire books. One person found this helpful.

This is a quick read of less than an hour. As always with Ms. Basque's work it is well written and edited,. Spinoza, a Private Investigator, receives a call to investigate unusual happenings in Buena Park, Orange Counties home to several of the biggest entertainment attractions in Southern California. Something not quite right is happening at the home of the medievil show. Spinoza is entrigued enough to investigate.

I found this ending to the series to be a tad underwhelming. While all the loose ends were tied up, it seemed just a little to easy. Our protagonist has shown deep seated emotional problems throughout the series which, in this last offering, are essentially cured in just a few pages. Not the realism I expect from this author. The story was good, interesting and fun otherwise.

His character is endearing, even with his hang up. I am also glad he came to teams with his sons death in this last novel. However, the fact that this novel headed towards a paranormal ending. It would been nice to have one more to round out Spinoza life.
