For all the visual people out there Art directors by nature learn visually by doing so when I found this series and reviewed it I knew I had found the right reference book. Easily laid out so that you see each menu for each step of the process. Not a long lengthy text description but a visual step by step execution of the event you wish to achieve.

Great for learning the program for the first time of for those who have also worked in them for a long time a great reference for the actions you don't perform often. The book taught me how to use many of the commonly-used functions of Dreamweaver CS4, which was the intended result. In addition, it explained a lot of hot-key or shortcut ways of doing things, which will be timesavers if I can remember any of them an appendix of shortcuts would have gone a long way towards increasing retention. Apparently, the fact that this is an "On Demand" book means that it doesn't discuss much about the concepts and facilities of the product, but rather explains how to do what you need to do on an example-by-example basis.

This may seem like an expedient way to transfer information, but, in this case, it tended to slow things down because the author had to repeat some things several times. For example, every time he talked about bringing in an image differently, he re-explained the image property panel.

In addition, the fact that concepts and facilities weren't thoroughly explained up front left some content out of sequence too. For example, the book discussed CSS several times before the chapter on CSS, so the reader was apparently supposed to know about it before being taught about it. I ended up concentrating most of my reading in the bulleted how-to sidebars because much of the mainstream text was extraneous to my needs and came across as didactic.

    • You see it everywhere you go: This went on for a few more sentences, none of which helped me to use the email tag! Fortunately, the how-to lists in the sidebars usually told me everything that I needed to know, although with some repetition of key concepts. A few of the examples didn't work right or looked different for me, so maybe the author had a different build of the product or was running it on a different OS. I've grown used to those minor inconsistencies in software how-to books, so that was no big deal.

    In summary, I was able to skim past the stuff I didn't need and get enough information to get me started.

    I have no idea who the target audience was for some of the prose in the book but I guess it doesn't matter as long as I was able to find what I needed. One person found this helpful. I like the fact that this book is very visual-oriented and not overly wordy. I followed some of the examples and they did not work.

    Not sure if this really matters or not, but the website that you will be working with in the exercises youtechtube is ugly. It's a good book, but I think some of the things in it are redundant. The way it is set up, unless you absolutely have no clue as to how to use a computer, is very repetitive.

    I would have bought the Adobe Classroom in a Book version instead if I had the choice from the start. Purchased as a recommendation for a class a local art school. It is a quick overview of some of the more often used features this powerful program offers. As a graphic designer I found this book technically complete but well written.
