Stevens pulls together many social interests and concerns of the time, including the fascination with mesmerism, class issues, the effects of poverty on health, the settlement houses of the time which aimed to provide the working classes with cultural as well as practical education, and the arguments for and against suffrage.

The story is told within the context of the Written in , during the height of the suffrage movement, this novel manages to be informative and engaging at the same time.
