After Kirby leaves, Della Street now connects this to an attack on a Doctor Babb who lives in the suburbs. A young woman was seen running from the Doctor's house, and she fits the description of Kirby's rider.

His assumption was that her car had run out of gas and that she had to find a gas station to get enough gas to get her car started again. He claimed that he drove her to where she had left her car, but it was no longer there. She was in a bind: As far as he let his wife know, he left her at the motel and then went on his way. He had no further contact with her.

Mason listens to the story and immediately finds the holes in it, but — after being retained by the wife — he had to fill in the holes so that the story was believable. The obligatory courtroom scene in this episode was particularly interesting, since Gardner takes the time to review the rules for evidence for the reader. All in all, this was a cleverly plotted installment in the Mason chronicles, and comes highly recommended.

May 15, Dave rated it it was amazing. Reading a Perry Mason novel is like peeling back the layers of an onion. Whatever you see at first glance isn't what you find as you peel back layer after layer. This book starts out with a wife wanting Mason to investigate her husband's cockamamie story about picking up a young lady on the highway who had run out of gas and whose car then promptly disappeared. Of course, once that story is ripped apart, other stories manifest. Here, we have a story not just of midnight bed hopping in cheap roadside motels, but if murder and missing journals and more. What's really great about the way Gardner sets up these stories is that he slowly reels you into the story and you just gotta find out what's really going on. The Perry Mason mysteries are often similar in structure to private eye novels in that the client's story is never what's really going on.

This book, particularly the later half, has a lot of courtroom action. Although the antics are a far cry from what really goes on in a courtroom, Gardner who had been a defense attorney for many years, had the knack and experience to lend a bit of realism to it. All told, you'll never go wrong picking up a Perry Mason and it's easy to see why they have been so popular over the years. Sep 08, Kate Picher rated it liked it. I figured out who the killer was about half way through. The cover art has absolutely nothing to do with the story.

But the sheer cheapo cheesiness of the cover finally got to me. Even some of the pages are printed crooked! I love that kind of retro stuff. Yeah, I picked the likely culprit out early on, and I even picked up on the echo, although I was also kind of willing to go to bat for an interesting red herring.

Of course, the number of women sneaking in and out of the house around the time of the murder got a little old, and, frankly, the premise never did really make complete sense. Why did the culprit do it? Because it seemed like a good idea at the time? Or simply because Gardner needed someone who was obviously the last person with a motive? Gardner sure took the opportunity to run circles around poor DA Ham Burger with the "technicalities of evidence," which is always fun stuff. Mostly what I learned is that a smart lawyer can break the law with impunity--which Mason certainly does, and he knows it--and still avoid getting called on it, even in court under a judge's nose.

Not really what I wanted to learn, to be quite honest. Sep 17, Anna rated it it was amazing Shelves: The story begins with a phone call received from a woman who was very much interested in Mason's cross examination skills.

Without the formal approval to be his lawyer, he has a little detective work done and as always does his best to protect his "alleged" client from any charges. The story develops a few small plots, that even though I knew they had to be connected to the whole story, I couldn't find the right way to fit all the pieces together. It's a nice story involving a little scandals, plot twists, mysterious murder, and personal malice. Mason also strongly emphasis his ethical position even if it'd cost him to be disbarred.

Naturally though, he wouldn't risk anything happening to his beloved secretary. I'm still reading through Erle Stanley Gardner, and I hope to finish his work this year. I try to get my hands on first editions through the interlibrary loan system. With this book, I have to settle for a paperback reprint and poorly at that from cheap paper, pale ink, crowded lines. For the first time, Gardner describes Paul Drake as having "dull eyes" and explaining how he can fade into any background much like a spy.

Della is put on the stand and Perry protects her, blocking the DA at every step. No evidence of Tragg. I've never read a Perry Mason book before and have heard great things about Erle Stanley Gardner 's prowess in the realm of the mystery genre. I found this book on the paperback book swap shelf and thought I'd check it out. It was an interesting tale, purely pulp fiction, but a quick read and decent brain candy. I love mysteries and would love to read more of his work. Feb 13, Giri Dv rated it liked it. Typical Perry Mason book.

Good for bedside reading and then getting to sleep. As usual, complicated story telling. Even then, you feel good to see Perry Mason winning and Hamilton Burger losing, whether you understood what happened really. The handyman's motive not very convincing. Could he not have stolen the book earlier? Somehow, you want to read Perry Mason even though the story is often muddled. Jul 20, ben rated it liked it. This was a quick read and the tale was quite interesting. The only problem I had which I have not had with the other Perry Mason novels I've read is I figured out what happened relatively early on in the story which took some of the luster away.

Granted, the legal maneuvering Perry uses to get through the seeming traps is pure genius and the dialogue is both quick and humorous while still providing a tense edge.
