This is one of a large series of books, yet I have chosen this story as it is definitely something all children school going age can relate to.

The chapters are short , engaging and the children absolutely love them. They can also be used within Drama where on placement the children liked to act out the scenes as i was reading them each short chapter. This book is particulary one of my favourites. It tells a a very funny story of a little boy who happens to get every parents nightmare a head full of nits.

  • This book is useful for guided reading and encouraging reluctant readers. The ability to complete a novel whilst allowing for a shorter concentration time span can help encourage a child to enjoy reading. The first story consists of Horrid Henry having a nit problem and having the worry of the nit-nurse coming to check once again, however he figures out how to solve the problem by transferring them to all his classmates.

    The second story consists of Henry scamming his brother and classmates in order to get a toy he desperately wants. His deceit however backfires and he gets both a fright and loses the money himself.

    The third story is about Henry going on a school trip. What initially Henry thought to be an exciting trip turns into a trip to the museum. He exchanges the crisps and nuts for the rotten ones he had made with his new toy. Afterwards he did a noisy and awful show injuring both the dinner guests in the process. As a result of Henry, the meal was ruined.

    It ends with what Henry desired, getting a pizza takeaway. Issues such as nits, sibling rivalry, being sent to bed over are all things children have most likely experienced. The characters all are rather extreme personifications of their names and the stories themselves do not pertain to morality as Henry generally gets away with the trouble he causes.

    Nevertheless it is a useful series to encourage reluctant readers due to the amusement of Henry and his mischief; it is only in one of the stories that Henry gets any kind of punishment. The way it is written makes it an enjoyable book for all ages, but especially six to 10 year olds. Horrid Henry books, due to their amusing stories can be great for drama. The short stories enable group discussions and are useful for drama. Children in groups can discuss and then act out the short stories, emphasising the emotions of Henry, his family and classmates.
