He has lived through the political oppression and intolerance of religion that defined Communist Czechoslovakia, and he draws from this experience to remind readers that not only does crisis lead to deeper understanding but also that any living religion is a changing religion. The central messages of Christianity have always seemed impossible, from peace and forgiveness in the face of a harsh world to love and self-sacrifice despite human selfishness to the victory of resurrection through the defeat of the cross.

It is a difficult way that offers an unclear immediate future, but it is ultimately the only honest way. Read more Read less. Add all three to Cart Add all three to List. Some of these items ship sooner than the others.

So far, I am really enjoying this book. Halik is from a different perspective than what I am used to, but I appreciate his knowledge, wisdom, and insight. There may be a slight learning curve in coming into this book that makes it a little inaccessible. The resources and other authors he brings to the table are well worth looking into while reading through the book. I would recommend dedicating to read a whole chapter at a time, then reflecting a bit on what he says. You may agree with everything he says or you may not, but you will definitely have a some more insight into your faith and your walk because of reading this book.

Halik also has a dry wit about him that comes out so clearly and is often so funny. The way he addresses the students who invite him to a youth rally particularly stood out to me. I will try to update once I have finished reading all the way through. One person found this helpful.

I read a lot of books - and I like a lot of books. And there are a few that I love, and this is one of them. Lewis said that we read to know we are not alone - but I did not expect to find that kinship and consolation in this book. It isn't easy reading, as other reviewers have said. I am tired of easy reading, and easy answers, and too-simple explanations. This is thoughtful, insightful, wise and honest. Read it and ponder it. When he writes about someone with whom you are unfamiliar - go read them too. We do not often challenge ourselves in our reading - try reading something a little more challenging than you are used to.

The next book will be easier Here is an except, one of the many I highlighted: But then there are the moments when light breaks through the clouds and we are able - nay we are obliged and duty bound - to say to those rebels, skeptics and weepers within and around us that maybe, in spite of everything, there is another way of seeing, assessing, and enduring all these things. For those who are seeking a challenge to their faith this book will do it. Not for the faint of heart.

Halik calls us to embrace the paradox within Christianity which invites us to see beyond our wasted efforts to control and manipulate our existence thus missing the mark. The line I encountered that has stayed with me the last few days is: That line rocked me and will be with me for sometime, I hope. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

Wonderful expression of a priest who meets people where they're at, and calls them to go deeper to see what they find. I read a borrowed copy of this book a couple of years ago and was impressed with it. This fall a study group I belong to is going to read and discuss the book. I think it will prove interesting. Halik's book is absolutely beautiful. Challenging, inspiring rather than revolutionary as the author begs for "the little faith" that may move one. See all 18 reviews.
