Especially since he joined up for all the wrong reasons as most young men do. The rest of the crew will develop closer bonds. They are a team tested by fire and are a work in progress - bravo. They, unlike the earlier group were thrown together and to me had a harder row to hoe to jell into a cohesive unit. Your first books allowed Braden, G-war, and Micah to "absorb" new team members one at a time - big difference, everyone had the opportunity to get to know each other and they had the CHOICE on joining in the adventure.

I'm wondering if this is why you were unhappy with the story. The first group learned to BE a team by trial and error, but had a single strong leader with a clear, uniting end goal - this group had to be manipulated into being a team and learn to function together. I gotta tell you I enjoyed the humorous situations you put them in - mud covered Hill cats and all.

Nicely dispersed through the story. This group of cats are over the top - snark taken to a new level. I was glad to see that the respect and equality of the different species remain. Braden would be proud of his descendants. The worldview was terrific. Well detailed with enough exploration of a possible future for Vii.

I kind of got lost on some of the ship stuff, but that's just me. I could understand it, but really isn't why I read space opera books. Lots of other neat techy stuff going on too. I also have to tell you one of things I truly enjoyed about this story was it wasn't a typical HEA ending - lessons learned were very painful. Pollyanna was on the ship and died.

I did feel that they took off with stars in their eyes and a not very realistic attitude about what kind of dire circumstances, other than ship disasters they could face. They came back much wiser than when they left. Bravo - well done. This is a separate universe and is a sequel sort of to the Free Trader of Warren Deep books. In this book the humanity of Cygnus VII has reached space and is exploring the universe to see if there is any other life out there. The story starts with Cain leaving home and joining the Space Exploration Service and this is the story of training and first cruise.

There are a number of characters who are engaging and the challenges with which they are presented are imaginative and enjoyable to read. There are some hints of Anne McCaffrey's dragon rider series. The clue is numbweed. The intelligent animals could have been lifted from the Spell Singer series too. This is an action book and not a comedy though. If you haven't read all of the Free Trader series then this book contains some real spoilers.

I'd only read the first of the Free Trader series and now I know the story arc and overall ending. I'll probably read the rest of them but on the basis of reading the firt book in each series I think that Cygnus Rising is the better series. Just a word about cats. As a cat person even I think that cats can be idiots.

Book of Imperial Shuttle Plans: Cygnus Spaceworks

Martelle's Hilcats have most of the unpleasant characteristics of cats but none of their virtues. So it's great to see cats in space but this isn't going to do thier reputation any favours. I like this imaginative sequel series and as space opera it's one of the better ones. Aspects of this book were enjoyable. I especially enjoyed a young adult enlisting in space exploration and going through boot camp. Another aspect of this book included various species that were considered "human".

They live in a purposefully peaceful planet and are quite shocked by off planet hostilities. Each character is quite unique in mind, species, and personality. This is the first of 3 books.

On a lower note, I did have a bit of trouble following the authors train of thought here and there. There were only a handful of typos. Sex was implied but in no way specific. The overall theme was that a group of citizens met and trained at boot camp.

Others noticed how well their squad worked together and when they were assigned an exploration ship together they had a few violent adventures. Space Opera has long been among my top few genre, The stories of an expansive world and the characters there in give a series a life of their own which one never wants to stop reading. Cygnus Rising is an excellent story based on a wider universe with well thought out and detailed characters to bring the story to life. I highly recommend this first book and look forward to the next one.

I have been ruined. Since reading this series and Craig Martelle's follow-on series Cygnus Arising, I can't find anything else to read that is as exciting to read and as well written. I absolutely loved this book. Branden and his Hellcat are outstanding characters, as are the other characters which are introduced as the book and the series continues. The story line is riveting and original.

Yet, as one reads this series, one continues to think of the writing style of Ann McCaffery, with a bit of Andre Norton thrown in. I believe any Science-fiction reader who has read and enjoyed these writers, will absolutely love this series!

One person found this helpful. Humanity returns to space. Good space opera, enjoyable story. Mixing races that actually cooperate on a starship crew is not new, but the idea must be pounded into our society repeatedly. America must learn to do this to remain a strong world power, a leader for fairness and equaity. No one voice can control a people, all, working together and protecting each other's rights to do as they wish, is the only way.

Similarly, the shuttle is described as meeting construction codes in a list of star systems which includes real stars visible from Earth and fictional locations from other science fiction series such as Doctor Who and the original Star Trek series. If taken literally, this list implies that the shuttle satisfies the safety standards of the Daleks , the Romulans , and a society based on Chicago gangsters of the s.

It is unlikely that there is a direct connection with the canonical Corridan sector , although this may be a reference back to the original location in Star Trek. Cygnus —the putative capital of the " Cygnus Star Empire ", giving rise to the name of the Cygnus Spaceworks that apparently found its way from here into canon. The "Cygnus Star System" is the only location that seems genuinely original to the blueprint; probably named for the real constellation Cygnus , the Swan, although the name of the "Pyxidis Asteroid Belt", said to be in this star-system, would rather imply a location in the constellation Pyxis , the Compass.
