If you're a word nerd or a language lover, this is the book for you. I was searching for a birthday present for a linguaphile friend of mine, and decided that this would be a pretty good purchase. Boy, was I wrong -- it was a great purchase! I found myself reading through the chapters, picking up all kinds of useful knowledge like the origin of the word "cappuccino" it's pretty interesting, and I won't spoil it for you. Seriously, this is a fun and interesting book on word origins and I highly recommend it.

I'm willing to bet that Garg's other books are also great, and I can't wait to check them out. Reviews on word books will be redundant. Their beginnings, changes in definitions, spelling, etc.

The Dord, the Diglot, and an Avocado or Two

I was a little disappointed in the size of the volume. Lots of fun and interesting words for any lexicology fan, but not enough to make it a worthwhile purchasing value. The author's daily words from his website made me want to buy this, but from now on I'll just wait for his daily post. This was a gift for my son.

The title was so intriguing that he sat down and started reading it the minute I gave it to him. He kept sharing little factoids from it with me and now that he has finished it, he wants me to read it. It teaches unique words as well as where they came from. You will learn words that you did not even know existed, and the story behind them will make you remember them for a lifetime. I think everyone could use to read this book to expand their vocabulary.

Therefore, I highly suggest this book because it will make you broaden your vocabulary in a fun and new way. You can flip through this book and pick up a few little things that are mildly interesting, though many fall into the common knowledge category and are therefore not very enlightening. Also, for those terms that are not familiar to many people, a pronunciation guide would have been helpful but apparently that idea was overlooked.

The entries are not particularly well written or organized. It is certainly not something anyone would open at the beginning and read through to the end. Like I said - a flip-through book when you are stuck with nothing to do for a few minutes, nothing more. See all 29 reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Get to Know Us. Man, this is a useful book -- aside from its informative value. It can be read from beginning to end, like any other book, but it's such light far that one can pick it up and dive into it. If the author read that last bit, he'd no doubt wonder how you can dive into something you've just picked up. I've done both, read it from cover to cover and browsed through it during commercials and lengthy boot ups. For every screwy word, we get a brief history and sometimes a gently amusing comment.

At the bottom of the page, there's likely to be a little challenging question. I don't want to bother looking them up now but I remember one: What number, when spelled out, uses the same number of letters as the number being referred to? I figured that out in a flash -- about five minutes. Try it you'll like it. I'm giving it four stars only because nothing is perfect.
