There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. First, I have two things to say: I am so glad I bought this book! I am so glad I read the review from timreadsbooks. The author does a great job bringing out all the important points of WordPress. There are so many features that she tells you about in the book, you could literally start an online business or community portal just by using it in creative ways.

The book is designed so that you don't have to read the whole book from front to back in order to find useful info. I picked certain chapters that focused on what I needed to know right now, and I am currently implementing that info. It allows you to do almost anything you want. Your mind is your only limitation! So, in conclusion, if you have absolutely no experience with web development, then you may want to study some HTML and PHP before buying this book.

Or, you could buy this book and study PHP as needed to perform certain, simple tasks. You don't have to be an expert web developer to use the information in this book. I am a self taught web developer, but all I knew about WordPress before I bought this book was that it was a very popular blogging system.

Now, I know why WordPress is so popular! I've come back to edit my initial review and promote it to 4 stars as I have found chapters 6 and 7 to be particular useful. The book covers some advanced topics but misses the mark in two big ways.

    5. First the quality of printing of the book, the font size and the readability of the screen grabs are very poor. Message to the publisher - you can do much better than this! Honestly, the printing is not much better then a newspaper. Second, the writing style seems at times "clipped" to me, This is particularly true in the later more advanced chapters, still its a great introductory to plugin and widget authoring.

    If this is your goal then you will probably want to also get a book specifically aim at development of these. If you are clueless about PHP then these last chapters will not be of much use to you anyway. For my purposes, I wanted a book to read "offline" on the train; therefore the book needed to be thorough and well illustrated.

    I also wanted it to go beyond a basic beginners guide that merely shows how to install and use WordPress, The book has a lot of useful information - The layout and illustrations could be much better. This book is exactly what I was looking for.

    It provides an overview of the UI and common plug-ins. It identifies pitfalls of the many decision points in configuration allowing you to make informed choices without a lot of trial and error.

    Further it explains customization with sufficient detail to let you get into it quickly. I am very pleased with the book. I have been a developer for 15 years and was new to WordPress. With this book I got into it and was productive with confidence in a few days. While this book is not terrible, I'm sure there are better alternatives out there.

    The book relies on many screenshots, but the screenshots are so small that the text in them is completely illegible, rendering the shots useless. Also, many terms are introduced in the text and discussed without first being defined, meaning you will at least occasionally, and probably frequently, be left scratching your head as to what the author is talking about. Finally, as others have mentioned, you will get little out of this book if you are not already familiar with PHP.

    This book is not for a "newbie" to WordPress. I don't think it was written with a step-by-step approach. Waste of my money and had to go and make a separate purchase. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. This is not a book for beginners.

    Explanations are overly detailed and do not get to the point.
