Outside in the yard, when Jake counts, Rose doesn't appear. When he goes to the office, the principal tells Jake that she moved to a new school, thus, she left him a picture of them at the dance. Not that there was much of a plan to begin with, but it had definitely involved more chasing and less running.

Ashe supposes there's one good thing about all this: Even better, Katsu Getting eaten by a dragon wasn't part of Ashe's plan. Even better, Katsu has enough knowledge of dragons and medicine that he might just be able to hatch an escape plan. Even better than that, Ashe is discovering that Katsu might not dislike him after all. It's a small step, Ashe hopes, from not disliking him to something significantly more.

In fact, this first adventure puts them in a life-threatening situation, and while there is a serious undertone, the way Ashe tells the story adds a lot of fun to the proceedings.

Ashe is an elf who acts before he thinks. Ashe also secretly admires Katsu, but has no idea how to approach the surly medic. I loved how he keeps getting minor injuries so Katsu has to patch him up. When they get trapped by a Dragon, both men try to come up with ideas for their escape, and I loved Ashe's continued sense of humor and the way he tells the story, even under duress.

Katsu likes to keep his distance from people, so he makes them think he is grumpy. Well, he really is grumpy most of the time, but he exaggerates it a little. I guess he is one of hose guys who hate showing emotions, but his care and protectiveness of Ashe, the way he ends up dealing with the dragon, shows he really cares.

He also almost admits it at one point… but only if you listen carefully. If you like fantasy, including dragons and elves, if you're looking for a lighter touch with some great humor, and if you enjoy reading stories about faraway lands and unlikely adventure, then you will probably like this short story. When one daft stunt means that Ashe gets left behind whilst the rest of the team go dragon hunting, he and Katsu find themselves chased by a dragon and trapped in a cave.

The best part of this story was the light, breezy tone to the writing. Ashe and Katsu work well as couple mainly because they are so opposite.

Announcement

The situation was a nice mix of action and tension as the men stumble across the dragon and then try to work out how to get out of the cave, and quieter moments as they get to know each other a little better. The way the men verbally spar with each other was quite delightful. The fantasy setting worked well, with most of the world-building done in and around the action.

I wanted to know more about such things like how the men and elves had come to work together, and in particular more about the different species of elf which is only hinted about in this story. Maybe the author is planning further stories set in and round this setting. The writing is excellent, the plotting swift with a good change of pacing and the characters are amusing and interesting.

  • This was a fun piece of fluff. The story was uncomplicated and an entertaining short read. I enjoyed the interplay between Ashe and Katsu who are almost complete opposites and hope to read more about them in the coming books. This was a worthwhile read for any fantasy lover. Katsu and Ashe have been pleasant antagonists as long as they've known one another, but JB McDonald gives them a common enemy and lets them sort it out. Opposite in every way, Ashe, the willowy, irrepressible, exuberantly horny elf, is fascinated by Katsu, the human medic.

The romance takes place in the action; these two haven't gotten along particularly — Ashe's methods for catching Katsu's eye usually make him look like a fool. Faced with an angry dragon, though, they manage to learn enough about each other and to work together well enough to remain uneaten.

They approach almost everything from completely opposite directions, but they do eventually meet, or agree to try to meet in the middle on everything from the best way to elude the dragon to how to deal with the power that surges in them both. Katsu complains, "You know, just about the time I start to think maybe you're a halfway decent guy, you get all high-handed and elfity.

There are hints and glimpses of the wider world here, not so much that it becomes world-building-dump and takes away from the action, but enough to raise my thirst to read more. I love this odd couple and am very glad to know there are further adventures. Feb 25, Chad rated it liked it Shelves: Dragon Hunted is a short but enjoyable adventure story featuring an unlikely but disarmingly cute pairing between a boyishly charming, outwardly horny elf and a roguishly handsome, surly human medic.

The writing is fair, although the whole story feels a bit rushed. Hopefully this means some of the background details are yet to come in the series. Because I'm a stickler for such details, I must also mention a highly disappointing issue that I had with the formatting of the ebook. The title page and dedication were squished onto the same page as the first lines of the novelette and the disclaimers and copyright info were simply tacked on at the end of the text, simply flowing from one to the next. How hard is it to put page divisions there? On the positive side, the banter between the two lovers is simply delightful and their relationship is hard not to love.

Also, the sexual tension buildup was executed perfectly.
