Please try again later. Tierney and Kletzer offer brilliant essays. Other essays are starchy and just classicist fluff. Formally, maybe, it is excellent "scholarship" sans all content because it is the most uncritical piece I have ever read. It is the utter pedantic formal scholarship and lack of critical thought that those tweed-wearing victorians in the undergraduate departments of the ivy league are contractually burdened to produce.

Simply look at any newspaper and you will find this statement the most absurd proposition humanly possible. This old-fashioned Aristotelian argument, it appears, is inadequate to the challenge of the utilitarians and contemporary theorists who supplant cognitive habit with big data and analysis of statistics. Surely he means lawyers in a general sense.

Murphy seems to addressing undergraduates who have not really examined the politics of language, of prescriptivism in grammar, let alone the injustices of legal history itself. Ethics aside, it seems somewhat bad taste. Murphy and others in this volume poised themselves to write a text for undergraduate "legal studies" majors and students in "pre-law. I do recommend the essays by Tierney, Porter, and Kletzer. The rest is just fluff and filler for academic CVs.
