Perhaps the author has no idea of how whiny and obnoxious she appears to the reader. The strength of the book is when she writes of the wonderful people she came into contact with. The celebrities mostly come off fairly well especially Jackie Robinson.

Growing up at Grossinger's by Tania Grossinger (2008, Paperback)

I stayed a If you stayed at Grossingers this book deserves a higher rating. I stayed at Grossingers and the Concord and smaller places so this book has some appeal. The book is missing the finale when the curtain drops. The saddest part about these books is what isn't written. We see these Hotels from the perspectives of the owners and entertainers. We don't see nearly enough from the ordinary workers. Perhaps some day the Catskill Institute will get around to that subject The writing could have been better.

Jan 31, Melissa rated it liked it. Tania's story is filled with celebrities, gossip, sexual shenanigans, lusty musicians, family drama, egos, pranks on guests, mean relatives, love and a girl's heartache. It is a very matter-of-fact memoir that pulls back the curtain on the famous Catskills resort - the place to go if you were Jewish, not necessarily single, and looking for Mr.

Questions?

The good stuff and the bad of being one of the lesser Grossingers living and working at the famous resort in the Catskills. Funny, intelligently written, great name dropping, the inside scoop. What a blessing in many ways that the author had a chance to observe, meet and befriend quite a few of the late greats. And what a powerful network and support system to have as she made her way educationally and career wise. The letter from Jackie Robinson got me all choked up.

A very mature and thoughtful accounting of an interesting life.

One person found this helpful. I enjoyed reading this story. There were still many of the same activities offered. The men wore still wore sport jackets. We all found activities that we could do together and felt bonded. I enjoyed getting a personal perspective of how it was growing up in this environment. Tania Grossinger is one hell of a writer. She makes "the Catskills" come alive for New Yorkers too young to have experienced its lifestyle first-hand; this is especially true for those of us who had our curiosity whetted by long-repeated family stories of "the mountains.

From their heyday in the s to the s, these mountains were the home of dozens of hotels ranging from tiny to huge. As the decades rolled on, each hotel added swimming pools and tennis courts and live entertainment. The Catskills was the place where the children's dining room, the social director and the singles weekend were invented.

What the area was most famous for, however, was the food. Each hotel served in massive, unlimited quantities. The menu information shared in the book, by modern standards, is shocking in its excess. None of those hotels was more important than Grossinger's. To do one's homework in a cocktail lounge, to watch the romantic interludes of the guests with titillation and a surprising degree of sophistication, to have to be nice to the guests regardless of any other reality.

Since Grossinger's also was the hotel which started the trend for performances by famous entertainers, Tania routinely met the big names of the times. Jackie Robinson was her morale booster and she watched the ill-fated courtship of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds from up close. There is a certain pathos to this report, since Tania was, quite literally, the poor relation of the Grossinger family.

The owners saw to it that her mother -- the widow of a Grossinger cousin -- and she were sheltered and fed but, other than that, they spared them little thought or kindness. The copyright reflects a re-issue of a title from the s. This makes for a bit of confusion, since there are apparently current references to places including the hotel no longer there and people long dead. The hotels all have disappeared, victims of the ease of jet travel coupled with a certain amount of boredom on the part of the guests with the same old vacation, time after time.

I really enjoyed this autobiography of Tania Grossinger. It was a quick and very absorbing read. Her insider's view of life in an iconic hotel with many famous names of the 40s and 50s is a perisroscopic view of an unusual lifestyle as a child turns into young adult. Loved this memoir - really a great insight of a bygone era from someone who had a birds-eye view and spent their formative years here.
