Much is going on in the time period covered by R. Samuel Baty's first novel, "Footsteps to Forever. The atomic age was about to begin and our world would be forever changed. This is the background against which "Footsteps to Forever" is set. The race is on! The story opens with President Roosevelt having sent a prominent physicist to Norway in the fall of to discern what progress the Germans have made in the development of atomic weapons.

Not long thereafter war is declared and out protagonists, two young army officers who have been sent to bring the president's physicist home, find themselves behind enemy lines. These two lieutenants, one man and one woman, are uniquely qualified for the mission. Constantly surrounded by German soldiers, they must find a way to get the physicist home.

As in all wartime situations, danger is always around the next corner.

Footsteps to Forever : A World War II Thriller by R. Samuel Baty (2008, Paperback)

The cast includes characters from both sides of the war. Fictional characters are skillfully associated with historical ones as the war takes them first to Europe and then to the Pacific theater. I have always been fascinated by this period of history and an avid r4eader of novels set against its background.

It's packed with thrills that will have you turning the pages late into the evening. I recommend it to your attention. Sam Baty does a masterful job in bringing several issues to the fore front in "Footsteps to Forever". To begin with, can one's conscience get in the way of making proper decisions? Or when, might you ask, is the price of a mission too high? Can one look beyond the obvious and see the good in humanity? These and other issues are inner woven throughout the novel. Instead of putting forth preconceived answers, the author graciously restrains himself and allows the reader to answer these and many more questions for himself.

Just how close to completion was the secret heavy water project? One can only speculate on what awaited us had the Germans successfully completed it. In conclusion one might sit back and ponder the sacrifices made by these individuals, and many more, to secure our freedom. When you begin to read "Footsteps to Forever" be prepared not to close the book.

The author does a magnificent job in keeping your interest peaked at every turn. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. This author has obviously never been to Norway, just to name a few of the "facts" he got wrong: A bus ride from Narvik to Vemork would not have been possible probably still is not during the war, it is also hundreds of miles. Vemork is in Telemark, which is a county or state in Norway, not a town. There is no Hardangervidda river, rather, Hardangervidda is a large mountain plain. Furthermore, the book is written with no depth, the characters have no life, and the books just rumbles on with sentences describing a sequence of events, like a calendar.

Over the past year, I have read more than Kindle books, this is by far the worst one I have read, and also the first one I have reviewed - I don't want anyone else to suffer through this garbage. Very similar to many of the same genre. Mixture of fact and fiction makes these novels interesting to read. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful.

I find it astonishing and I am absolutely baffled that so many reviewers find this book to be 4 or 5 stars. This does not speak well for the credibility of those reviews on whose basis I purchased this book. I agree completely with the other negative reviewers that the dialogue and sophistication of this book is at a grammar school level of kids of the s. Modern kids of this age would roll on the floor at this amateurish book. It's just a few notches above " See Spot chase the ball. PS - On a technical note, and in concordance with the level of the book, the author never does explain exactly how heavy water is used in the manufacture of nuclear energy - look up "neutron moderator" if interested.

I read a lot of mystery and spy novels.

Footsteps to Forever was trite, predictable, and dull. I could not force myself to finish the book. This is one of the best novels I have read in awhile.

I would have liked to have finished the book knowing what happen to the rest of Otto's family. That is the only negative I have and it is minor!

Aug 06, Tanya rated it it was ok Shelves: Interesting plot but the book drags in places.

The sentences are clipped and I felt the author dragged too many incidents of the war into the storyline. Nov 29, Steve added it.
