The wrong Target

Leaders who have signed on to the #AbolishIce cause have an affirmative responsibility to make sure it's not turned into scapegoating.

The instrument of some though not all of those policies has been ICE. But it is just that: Indignant at those policies, abolitionists have seized on ICE as a convenient target for their wrath. But getting rid of the agency, or breaking it up, will not change the laws they dislike or, more to the point, the senseless ways in which the administration has chosen to enforce them. No doubt, ICE is guilty of unwarranted abuses — rounding up noncriminal migrants who have led exemplary lives for years in the United States; breaking up communities and families; the unforgivable mess of splitting children from parents without any firm idea of how they might be reunited.

Balance is the wrong target

And why single out ICE for abolition? Customs and Border Protection , also a constituent agency of Homeland Security, has its own track record of brutality. It served as a co-conspirator in the splintering-without-accountability of more than 2, migrant families this spring, many of whom, in the case of asylum seekers who presented themselves at U.

None has proposed an alternative or a replacement. Its investigative division handles cybercrime; human trafficking; narcotics; counter-proliferation involving nuclear materials and other military wares; child exploitation; even stolen art.

Those are all vital and legitimate functions of government, as is deportation. The White House tries to extend its cruel crusade against migrant families. For a goal to make sense, for it to be attainable, it must have an end.

There is a longing in each of us to do what matters most, to give our time, focus and energy to the places that we desire to give it to and that deserve it from us. We are complex beings, and as such, we have complex needs and desires. Have you ever met or been?

I had a supervisor that sent emails at 10pm, at 2am, at 5am… every day. Or, have you met the person or been?

Talking about transparency is shooting at the wrong target

We create narratives that justify the choices. Work is crazy right now, but just another month or so and it will all get better. Same comment the next month, and the next.

See a Problem?

If we work all the time, we will find more ways to work all the time. We will get sucked into those choices. We start to feel the need to pull back out, to find the ever shifting, unattainable balance we so badly crave. Doing what matters most, when it needs to matter most.

what we do:

Our identities are more than just one thing. As author Greg LLevoy describes it , we are a polydox. We are more than just workers.

We are more than just family members. We are so many things to so many people. How can there be balance in that? Stop looking for balance, start looking for the acknowledgment and intention to embrace all that you are, and make choices that honor your multifaceted nature.
