A true progression can be felt as the album plays out and I found myself enjoying it more and more, especially as the band upped the melodic dosage between brutal riffs.

This is not meant to down-play on the heavier sections, just to highlight the well-balanced songwriting throughout Purgatory Afterglow. Crimson wastes no time with a melodic intro and punches you in the face, giving you the shock needed for the in-depth, concept song that follows. While the later released digital version was split into eight different songs, originally this reverent piece was a solid forty minute block of progressive death metal. With Crimson , I began to understand the Opeth comparisons that I had read about with the band.

There may be some people cringing at this point but the comparisons, to me, are warranted. Nevertheless, on to the music! Crimson is a spectacular show of storytelling and songwriting. The narrative depicts an intricate post-apocalyptic world that finds the human race infertile and barren.

However, in proper Edge of Sanity fashion, this mood is cast from my mind as the upbeat tracks that follow weave in-between death metal chugs and 70s hard rock riffing. In reality, these concepts should not meld together within the span of one song, but Edge of Sanity makes it work with a highly compelling approach. Whereas the songs flow well on their own, Infernal lacks the cohesion previously heard on Crimson and it is a real shame. Cryptic seems to be a very polarizing record among fans.

Having seen both positive and negative words regarding the album, I was skeptically eager to take the plunge. I jumped out and landed smack dab in the middle of a boiling pot of sludge. At first, I thought it was a fluke and that Edge of Sanity was just being themselves again, playing whatever they felt on one track and something completely different on the next. Then track 2 played, and track 3 played and so on until the whole album was over and I was still swimming in that thick, putrid sludge. And, well, I liked it. Why may you be asking? Now, to clarify, I like this as a one-off album and would very much like to have heard this under a different name.

Clocking in at a brief 35 and a half minutes, the album is well worth a listen and perhaps a few more visits if it grabs you. Whereas the band had been dabbling with these instruments before, during several movements here they take the lead providing many memorable melodies and push the buzzsaw guitars out of the limelight. He weaves poetically and effortlessly through a sequel story set in the lifeless world of its predecessor, portraying brutal yet beautiful settings and situations. That was an intense exhibition.

Once again, I thank you for putting up with my ramblings of past bands and the drive all of you give me to continue. Has a passion for songs with "Metal" in their title. And other words like "Hail" and "Kill". The Toilet Ov Hell. Examining Edge of Sanity: A Discography Breakdown Discography , Metal. By Boss the Rossover. Actually, I returned to listening to this album by accident, around , while using some documentary about Nazi crimes, and heard familiar, haunting melody line in the background - it was the intro piece to this album. Only then I realized how emotionally charged, musically rich and strong this piece was, After then I listened to the album again, and realised, that beneath the rough, brutal surface of traditional Swedish death metal there are unbelievably nice, progressive undercurrents of melodic brilliance and strong, haunting and emotionally atmosphere.

Edge of Sanity are not among those progressive metal bands who rely on their technical ability and odd time signatures, instead, emphasis are on the exceptional composing skills of Dan Swano. Almost all songs are masterpieces, expect two of them - hardcore sounding "Feeding the Charlatan" and gothic piece "Sacrifice". Unlike many other listeners, I actually enjoy both of these songs, but they are not up to the standard of the rest of the album and do not fit in stylistically.

Buzzsaw, dropped down to B, riffs that are also somehow effused with strong melodic content, ferious drumming and the insane vocal skills of Dan Swano.

Examining Edge of Sanity: A Discography Breakdown

Edge Of Sanity may be the only band in the world to get the heavy to melodic ratio down perfectly. In many ways this fits perfectly into it's place in the EOS catalog. Expanding upon the sounds of earlier albums like Nothing But Death Remains and Unorthodox but not quite refining it into the more melody-laden sounds of later albums, Purgatory Afterglow and Crimson.

This is by far Dan Swano's best DM performance, even though the clean vocals on this album are lacking a bit in quality. At least their few and far apart. No death metal collection is complete without this release. This album is really something.

Edge of Sanity

Dan Swano is an awesome metal producing mind. This was the evolution after Unorthodox, while not bad, it lacked a little of proffesionalism displayed in this cd. The songs are ULTRA heavy, with alot of death metal growling, and interesting riffs, and catchy melodies. A real death metal album. Though "Sacrificed" sounds a little bit weird, kind of a electric metal, without the Swano grunts, however its surprisingly good, and very refreshing.

Great album, buy it. I bought this album a while back at a record store for the hell of it. I am a huge metal fan a love MetallicA and many other good metal bands from Rammstein to Ozzy. This band isnt very well known but the album is very good. The band is Swedish and the album is made in Germany. The songs are heavy, with a hyperfuzz guitar sound and very melodic.

The singin, or "Throat" is fine by me but may not be with others but is very tollerable. I like to pop this one in the car changer when im in the mood for somthin with high energy sound. Pick it up and see for yourself.
