Essentials of Medical Biochemistry: With Clinical Cases

Expert biochemist N.V. Bhagavan's new work condenses his successful Medical Biochemistry texts along with numerous case studies, to act as an extensive.
Table of contents

A few topics appear to be put randomly in sequence, for example, the chapter on lipid digestion and absorption is placed before explaining lipids. Chapters also include relevant physiological explanations, eg.

Metabolism has been discussed well. Each and every chapter has been written with utmost delicacy. The inclusion of chapters on topics like cancer, metabolism of xenobiotics, etc. The book includes detailed chapters on immunology and haematology, enough to build basic concepts. Haematological tests important for diagnostics are also mentioned.

Endocrinology is allotted five chapters and is explained extensively, describing all systems involved, including the reproductive system. Additional topics and chapters of applied importance such as autophagy, obesity, diabetes mellitus, etc , are also described, which provide a good clinical correlation and understanding of pathophysiology. Text in the book is supported by well depicted, coloured, clear figures and illustrations.

Compact summarizing tables are also given that are useful for quick sight and revision. At the end of each chapter, authors have provided a list of supplemental references and required readings, to encourage further learning. Readers who wish to explore the beyond chapter material will be benefited from it.

Readers will need to refer to reference values of the tests mentioned in the cases to conclude diagnosis. Clinicians and postgraduate students will easily grasp these clinical cases and explanations, but the undergraduate students may need reading of additional chapters to understand the overall picture plotted in the problem. This additional part of the book is targeted at promoting problem-solving skills, diagnostic acuity and evidence-based medicine in students. The book would also be a very useful starting point for those who are experts in other field of basic research but have an interest or need to relate basic biochemical processes to and disease mechanisms in a broad range This book is very concise on most of the topics it covers.

It describes the principles to the point the students need without lengthy elaborations that takes too much time that students often find hard to find due to heavy study load. Accompanied by case studies, this is a very good book for medical orientated students. Yuzhu Zhang Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Illinios Institute of Technology "The writing style is in general easy to read and the topics that I have reviewed seemed to be explained well. The chapters on genomics and hematology are handled better by Bhagavan than in other books that I'm familiar with.

It was probably this coverage in Bhagavan that made it our choice. The hematology section is better than that in most full hematology books. Since , he has been teaching medical biochemistry to students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. He is also actively involved in the various aspects of molecular biology and biochemical research in the field of clinical medicine. An active professor, researcher, and teacher, he has many years of experience in both the instruction and practice of clinical biochemistry.
