Hotels near Seine River. There was an onslaught of new characters in one chapter, the window scene, which I found confusing. Keep in mind I tend to read a ton of free books from amazon. This is something I would expect if published by Scholastics for distribution within schools. Jan 27, ZaBeth Marsh rated it really liked it Shelves: Garretson has created a strong heroine in Clary Ashton, a British art student who spent her childhood traveling the American west with her father and brother.

At each step in this mystery Reese tries to cover up the clues to this international espionage that includes Russian revolutionaries, impoverished British aristocrats, and botany. Garretson weaves an amazing grasp for art, Parisian history, and chemistry in this mystery story.

Clary has that approachable American attitude, and Reese is the sophisticated, manly spy as sexy in a tuxedo as he is in a workman's clothing. The herione is hindered in her investigation both by the attitude towards woman and the limits of class distinction of the time.

Clary does have the advantage of a different upbringing which helps her navigate these challenges. There were plenty of twists and red herrings to keep the mystery going. Gargoyles and padlocks! - Seine River

One fairly bad problem was the typos and awkward phrases. There were quite a few throughout the book. Most were of the type that inserted an extra word or omitted a needed word. Several of the typos that had extra words could have been caused by the author not being sure of which word or tense to use so both were used. One very confusing typo happened near the end of the book were a character was called by a different name one that was not used anywhere else in the book.

The funniest typo was were a character was trying to say another character wasn't too smart. The character says,"a man whose brain was the size of a possum. Hopefully the author meant his brain was the size of a possum's. For those who don't know an adult opposum, or possum, can weigh over 10 pounds so that would be a larger than normal brain.

Jan 23, Jennifer rated it it was amazing. This is another mystery that I did not solve before the end! That as I have said in previous reviews is a good start to show that this is a well written book. I also really like the setting, as a lover of European history, 's Paris is a great hook. The writing makes you feel as if you are entering a different world and Clary is a great guide through the time. She is clever and caring and has an edge that shows she can take care of whatever situation she gets involved in.

I enjoyed the story This is another mystery that I did not solve before the end! I enjoyed the story and found the writing to be inviting and well paced. I know I have said it before but for me if the book is paced well and the characters are enjoyable and inviting - the combination makes for a great story!

I highly recommend this to those who enjoy historical fiction with a mystery and or thriller slant. I also think those who just like historical fiction should give this a try.

If you are a mystery lover and don't usually read those with a historical slant, try this as an introduction! It is not difficult as the era is described beautifully. Apr 05, Cynthia Hill rated it liked it. Eventually the story started going along at a good clip, and I loved the details of British and American expats living in Paris at the end of the 19th century. Gargoyle or not, these grotesques indeed have some of the grandest views of Paris! Hello and thank you for stopping by, Andy! Your images inspired me…. We also miss the City of Lights, as well as France.

Makes me homesick…just for a brief moment though!

The breathtaking sites here in the Philippines and beyond are a great distractor. How I miss Paris. I cannot believe it took me a few visits there to finally make it up among the gargoyles of Notre Dame.
