The limeworks was in use during the 19th and early 20th century. We excavated burials from a medieval church cemetery for three weeks. In , during my MSc I excavated a medieval hospital cemetery and a Merovingian settlement in the Netherlands. Working at these archaeological sites catalyzed my interest in bioarchaeology, the study of human remains from archaeology sites.

Beforehand, I was unsure what I wanted to specialize in within archaeology. Field school reinforced my interest in bioarchaeology, and today, I am pursuing a PhD in the subject. My professors reiterated that field school is the most important experience for an archaeology undergraduate student, but the coursework at universities does not reflect this sentiment. In field schools, students receive practical training in their discipline, and also meet students from other universities who are also passionate about the subject. Field schools enable students to develop practical skills, such as archaeological excavation or geologic survey, which cannot be learned in the classroom.

Finally, field schools connect undergraduate students with early career scientists and senior faculty for mentorship. I would suggest students looking for a traditional academic field school experience visit the Institute for Field Research IFR ]. IFR also offers two types of field school scholarships, one that is merit based and one that is based on financial need. Field schools have many benefits, but are also prohibitively expensive.

The public university system was designed to make education affordable and accessible to all students. I am troubled that field schools are not integrated in the public higher education system, when so many professionals identify fieldwork training as critical to success.

The lack of financial aid means the field school system is only accessible to students who can afford to pay the fees out-of-pocket, limiting the experience to students who can afford the fees. Consequently, students from low-income backgrounds are less likely to pursue an education in science disciplines where field training is crucial. The lake levels were fluctuating during these periods and could have led to the shift from a fisher-hunter-gatherer lifestyle to pastoralism. During the early Holocene years ago , the lake was at a high stand up to about 80m above the current lake level.

This corresponds with the African Humid Period when most parts of the continent, north of the equator, were wetter. Barbed-bone points harpoons have been found in the early-middle Holocene paleo-beach deposits at Lothagam. The fisher-hunter-gatherers could have used them for fishing. Pottery and stone tools are also present. Going into the middle Holocene, about years ago, it got drier and the lake levels dropped by about 50m.

New types of pottery emerge as well as the setting up of communal cemeteries. Bones of livestock like cattle, sheep and goats have been recovered from these middle Holocene deposits suggesting that the inhabitants had started herding. Pastoralism seems like a mode of coping mechanism to the drier conditions that characterize the basin even to the present day. Note that you are limited to submitting one extra-credit essay per week. Just as with required homework, extra credit submissions will only be counted if they are thoughtfully written and argued. All extra credit work must be submitted by the end of the last day of class, on March 15, Labs - In labs you will often be given paper forms to guide you through lab activities. Use these to develop rough drafts of your final lab assignments. These forms will be available electronically on the Canvas Lab Assignment for each Lab date. Final drafts of Lab exercises are to be transferred to the online forms usually Word.

Extra credit assignments should be turned in electronically Through the Extra Credit Assignment links. If you run into difficulties submitting assignments, contact your TA to discuss an alternative. If the deadline is imminent, sending the assignment to your TA as an email attachment is a good way to ensure you receive on-time credit for your work. After that labs will not be accepted. Exceptions to this policy will only be made on the basis of arrangements made with the TA prior to the due date of the assignment in question, or in the case of a documented emergency.

There will be a quiz after the last week of the class due Sunday instead of Monday. While you have three days to start each quiz, once started you will have 60 minutes to complete each quiz you will probably only need 10 minutes. No make-up quizzes will be allowed. Exams : There will be two examinations one midterm and one final scheduled as shown on the Calendar. Examinations will be in short answer and essay format and will test your comprehension of key subjects from lectures, readings, movies, labs. The exams are cumulative, but will emphasize the material covered since the previous examination.
