Friends and family who reach out to him demonstrate understanding that outward prickliness can be a sign of emotional suffering. Charlie feels bad about how he's treating the people close to him and takes responsibility for putting his friends, his community, and others in danger. When Jack's threatened, Charlie steadfastly works to help him, as do other characters who risk their safety to aid his quest. He and his loyal, compassionate friends have bonded by supporting each other through difficult times.
Charlie's family members are frustrated with his behavior, but they still try to comfort and help him. Charlie's in constant peril in the Netherworld. Beyond the cackling witch and her cat, hungry to eat a boy, there are gorgons, fanged bunnies, goblins, and countless more monsters. But, ultimately, it's a reassuring, comforting book about the power of fear and how to overcome it. The death of Charlie's mother several years earlier and his suspicion that his new stepmother's a witch drive the plot.
His friends have their own weighty worries, including a boy dealing with teasing and a girl whose mother suffers from severe depression.

Twelve-year-old Charlie hasn't had a decent night's sleep in months -- not since his family moved into the creepy purple mansion belonging to his stepmom, Charlotte. She's a witch, he's certain of it, and she's probably partly to blame for the menacing witch who taunts Charlie every night as he sleeps. During the day, Charlie irritably snaps at his brother, his dad, and even his friends, who are concerned about him.
Charlie feels guilty, but he's more worried about the witch, who's threatening to take him -- or worse, his brother -- to the Netherworld for good. The only way to end his nightmare is by crossing into the Netherworld and facing his fears, with help from his friends and the walking nightmares who live on the other side.
Fiction Writing
The writing is a little flat, and the children, armed with positive affirmations and frequent epiphanies, rise a little too easily to formidable challenges. But children are likely to enjoy the warmhearted, affectionately told tale and the appealing characters. The Netherworld is richly imagined with a nice balance of humor and horror -- this is one nightmare young readers will eagerly revisit.
Families can talk about how Charlie's friends and family try to help even when he's being so hostile.

Her Father is not what you would call nice. He is Very far from " nice ". Everyone in town even knows, about the OH MY Everyone in town even knows, about the physical abuse. They can guess at what else. But any attempt to help the poor girl was thwarted by the courts, and that was that. For them. But poor Elenore still stayed. Evan Ramirez is an investigator who has just been hired from our of town. One of his 1st cases is three missing persons. All men. During his investigation , one name kept coming up Elijah Griffin.
All roads lead to him.

As investigator Ramirez keeps digging , he finds way more then he bargains for. I found this book totally captivating, and once started , I could hardly put it down!!! Once again Ditter Kellen has touched my soul I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. View all 3 comments.

It is available through kindle unlimited. It also has an ending I I am Elle is a dark, disturbing novel about a girl who suffers from horrific abuse at the hands of her father. It does have trigger warnings for abuse and is not for the faint of heart as the subject matter is quite difficult. This is my first book by this author and I will definitely be checking out more of her books. Jul 06, Jeanne rated it really liked it Shelves: jeep-diva , arc-direct. Ditter Kellen has created one of the most complex characters you'll find in a book. Elenore is beyond damaged.
It's hard to read how awful her life has been and continues to be. Elijah Griffin is the evilest man. I don't think one could be more evil and loathsome. Evan Ramirez is a good cop and is finally making progress in solving the case of several missing men. All of whom had been in contact with Elijah recently.
It becomes clear way too quickly that there's more going on and it's all despicable and horrendous. In addition to wanting to find justice for Elenore, Evan finds himself skirting the edge of the proper protocol because he's attracted to her and feels the need to take care of her. As Evan continues to investigate and more and more awful details of Elenore's past come out the story continues to leave the reader guessing.
