Each student will take an oath of office in his or her respective branch of service in one of three commissioning ceremonies taking place on May 25 on the Rensselaer campus in the Curtis R. The taste for new and original fare has changed campus dining at Rensselaer. Today, a plethora of delectable meal options that includes ethnic cuisines, made-to-order restaurant-style meals, themed meals, guest chef nights, and various specialty desserts — often using local and organic ingredients — can now be found across the campus. For example, for the annual Commencement barbecue, Sodexo will be using locally baked hamburger and hot dog buns, as well as locally made ice cream novelties, bottled water, and canned Pepsi products.

In addition, Sodexo will use Aspretto, a percent fair trade certified coffee. The sustainable coffee program, launched last year, is also available in all the resident dining halls. Following the barbecue, Sodexo has invited area food pantries to help them distribute any remaining food items. In addition, the dinner plates, napkins, and utensils are produced with a combination of recycled material and plant enzymes to aid in composting breakdown. Sodexo also plans to recycle all cans, bottles, plastic table covers, and aluminum food service pans.

The Union is unusual in that it is entirely student-run and its operations are paid for by activity fees. No other student union located at a private university in the United States is entirely student run. It is a fellowship of the most active in student activities and has inducted more than 1, members since its founding.

RPI has around twenty intramural sports organizations, many of which are broken down into different divisions based on level of play. Greek organizations compete in them as well as independent athletes. There are also thirty-nine club sports. Given the university's proximity to the Berkshires, Green Mountains and Adirondacks, the Ski Club and the Outing Club are some of the largest groups on campus. The Ski Club offers weekly trips to local ski areas during the winter months, [] while the Outing Club offers trips on a weekly basis for a variety of activities.

The Rensselaer Polytechnic is the student-run weekly newspaper. Although it is the Union club with the largest budget, The Poly receives no subsidy from the Union, and obtains all funding through the sale of advertisements. RPI has an improvisational comedy group, Sheer Idiocy, which performs several shows a semester. Another notable organization on campus is WRPI , the campus radio station.

The guide to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute RPI will give prospective and new students a fairly good idea of what expect from campus life at this excellent engineering college. My daughter is a Sophomore this year at RPI and we picked up this book for her to be sure she is getting the most out of the college and the Troy, NY area.

The guide is compiled with input and comments from the students, which does often give a perspective that the Admissions Office might not want to be overly publicized, but a lot should be taken with a "grain of salt".
