As with the author's previous books, this one is epic in scope and features multiple plotlines that all converge at the end. This time around numerous famous authors and figures are put into adventurous settings, as we learn for instance that the man who wrote Dracula actually had battles with the undead.

Let me start by saying that Wayne Reinagel is the most perplexing author in the New Pup movement. He writes the best action scenes in the biz but he also has several habits that drive me nuts. For instance, the opening chapter pits H Rider Haggard against a horde of vampires. It's thrilling and was so good that I actually told my wife while reading it, "This guy's the best pulp author alive today.

He's doing That Thing again! It's extremely disconcerting and takes me right out of the story. It's needed information but it's so predictable that when you see a new character enter the scene, you know that it's going to be followed by several paragraphs of biography. Wayne's able to mix it up sometimes and have characters relay info to each other but far too often, it's "Here's Character B. Here's Character B's appearance.

Here's Character B's life story. On with the adventure! Wayne's characterization and action scenes are so good that I'm willing to overlook the info-dumps and I strongly encourage others to try his work if they haven't already. The concepts here are fascinating and I love the way he ties characters together. There were scenes here that made me laugh, some that made me nearly tear up and even some that caused me to lean forward in anticipation. It's that good -- it's just that there are things that, for me, keep this from being an absolute classic.

I really feel that Reinagel is one of the top five authors in the New Pulp movement.

Depending on what chapter I'm reading at the time, I might even say he's the very best. This is well worth a look and continues a trend of each book by Reinagel being better than the previous one.

Reinagel that I have had the pleasure to read. He involves a great many individuals from our past as major characters and minor. In addition He includes characters like Dracula in this fun to read novel. I met Wayne at a book signing last fall. We talked about the book and I had to read it. Some of my favorite writers were included as heroes in this adventure.

Be warned In addition, he identifies the major and many minor characters, giving a brief bio of who they were and their accomplishments. This is not the last book by Mr. Reinagel I will read. He has joined the ranks of the many authors I enjoy His writing put me in the story with the characters Several years ago, writer Wayne Reinagle burst upon the pulp fiction world with a self published tome that was the pulp equivalent of "Gone With the Wind. Still, as badly exceuted as that book was, the poor mechanics could not disguise the genuine love and enthusiasm Reinagel possessed for these iconic heroes and how much fun he had playing with them.

Despite its literary flaws, the book is also important in that it was the beginning of Reinagel's super saga that would invariably use every major literary hero and villain from both the 19th and 20th Centuries spread across an historical roadmap of herculean breath and girth. Somewhere in all this Reinagel came to an unexplainable decision in regards to his pulp magnus opus; he'd inadvertently begun it in the middle. It went back decades to give us the origins of the people who would ultimately sire the pulp heroes of the Great Depression.

Asserting his genuine talent, Reinagel's prose is much improved with this book though it still suffered the same affliction as its predecessor; massive dumps of historical data were dropped helter skelter through the narrative even in the middle of some balls-out action sequences. Some times to the detriment of his tale. Clocking in at an impressive pages, it adds proof that the guy simply cannot write a short piece but it also loudly proclaims his arrival as a sophisticated storyteller.

This is the work of a craftsman who judiciously balances both action and characterizations and even though there are still many researched historical facts, they are kept concise and only used when propelling the action forward. That this is the writer's fastest paced, most colorful and grandiose book is blatantly obvious from the first page to last. Once again, the author propels us backward to lay the foundation of heroic fiction in a brilliant twist that is pure nectar of the gods to any reader who grew up enjoying the fantastic literature of the 19th Century.

The heroes of this volume are the writers who produced those amazing works all of us encountered along the road to maturity and adulthood; the English classics with a few mongrel relatives thrown in for good measure. The plot is simple enough. The planet's are about to align in a unique positioning only witnessed every thousand years and two insidious fiends, Varney the Vampire and his stooge, a teenage Aleister Crowley, plan to use the stellar phenomenon to their own twisted ends.

They wish to open a hole to another dimension; one filled with demons eager to crossover and destroy the earth.

But to do so, Varney requires nine special magical tablets or else his insane plot will fail. Guarding those arcane items are the most famous and courageous souls of their times; H. They are led by an enigmatic, seemingly immortal beauty, Mary Shelly. Now if that isn't a Who's Who list of the most influential writers in English Literature during the late 19th Century, then I'd be at a loss to compile another. The exuberant bravado of Reinagel is his fearlessness in employing this stellar cast and bringing them to wonderful life in his glorious adventure.

It is now and a bloody reckoning is coming. She is quick with her wit as well as with a sword or gun. She is eager for an adventure before she settles into a life of duty and political marriage to man she does not know.

But her quest turns black when she becomes the target of a merciless vampire clan. Her only protector is The Greyfriar, a mysterious hero who fights the vampires from deep within their territory. Their dangerous relationship plays out against an approaching war to the death between humankind and the vampire clans. The Greyfriar: Vampire Empire is the first book in a trilogy of high adventure and alternate history.

Vampire literature - Infogalactic: the planetary knowledge core

Combining rousing pulp action with steampunk style, The Greyfriar brings epic political themes to life within a story of heartbreaking romance, sacrifice, and heroism. Now, the person responsible for the attacks on the vampire population has resurfaced, and Lady Dorn may be the only one who can stop them.

Or will her luck come to an end at the hands of her most treacherous ally? Modern Marvels - Viktoriana. Be warned - These vampires don't sparkle!!
