The main focus on the project is to obtain a holistic view on the future fire regimes in Europe, taking into account both physical factors, such as climate change, as well as social factors, such as fire management. To build capacities for building resilience and adaptation to fire regime changes, research will also focus on the effects of various fire management strategies on biodiversity, socio-economic systems and fire regimes.

In addition, the findings of this research will be directly fed into forest fire policy and there will be outreach to local communities to equip them with knowledge on forest fires.

A lightning flash illuminates the a storm on the Earth while the Milky Way illuminates the sky above in this stunning picture from the ISS. Even as the sunset creates striking views across Earth, the sun has hovered around low levels of activity over the last few months.

The face of the sun was nearly spotless this month as our star marches toward solar minimum, hitting its lowest activity level since Astronaut Scott Kelly, who returned to Earth in March after spending a year in orbit, captured this stunning sunrise on the 1 March as he prepared to depart the space station aboard a Soyuz spacecraft.

Questions?

Conventional wisdom holds that solar activity swings back and forth like a simple pendulum. At one end of the cycle, there is a quiet time with few sunspots and flares. At the other end, solar max brings high sunspot numbers and frequent solar storms. It's a regular rhythm that repeats every 11 years.
