I chose this book because it was Christmas time and I was in the mood. Also, I've read all Louis L'Amour's books multiple times. This is the book that was set in something like the 's yet one of the people in it had a rifle. The '06 in that rifle cartridge name comes from , the year the cartridge came about. I couldn't take any more. Love this book I love Mr. I have read quite a few since I discovered him. This one was a delight with twists and turns I did not see coming. With heart and soul and visiting characters I have come to love, reading this chapter of the Jensen's and Preacher, just fit beautifully into the season.

Looking forward to my next visit into their world. Dec 23, Joy Gerbode rated it liked it. This certainly wasn't what I expected But it did keep my interest, and I enjoyed the developing characters There were quite a few, and they had similar names, and it was difficult to remember who was who.

Still, a nice piece of Christmas fluff to finish off the year! Nov 28, Laura Aase rated it liked it. This was enjoyable but what does this book want to be? It begins following a bunch of characters who all end up being on the same train together. When outlaws take to over and an avalanche stops the train - who will survive. Dec 16, Jeni rated it liked it. But it had cowboy saviors, dirty outlaws, saloon women, spiritual visions, and a touch of Christmas heart. Cheesy, good for a Christmas read, not too shabby.

Feb 06, Pam Bourdette rated it it was ok. This was to far fetched to enjoy!! Living in Colorado we know this wasn't even close to possible with this snow melting so quick! May 20, Kathy Davis rated it liked it Shelves: Would make a good Hallmark Christmas movie. Mar 17, Deanna S. Johnstone has done it again. A REAL page turner! HIS stories are always good reading. Dec 11, HornFan2 Mike rated it it was ok Shelves: About the only Christmas books, I'll read are the Westerns.

It wasn't a bad book till the sucky ending, you got multiple intertwining storylines in this one and I think they leave you hanging on a few. Rocky Mountain Christmas 2017 * Good Hallmark Release Christ

The supernatural element in this one is so lame, perhaps asinine's a better word for it, the ghost writer wastes a chunk of the book just continuing the intertwining storylines and with 30 pages to go, pushes the Staples easy button. Which we know doesn't exist, but the only food you have for four days is rationing of Coyote stew and nothing else.

Miraculously Smoke and Duff save the day, aided by Preacher's ghost they make it to the stranded train, with crackers and sardines and the escape was quite the gem. I also thought the religious tie-in were the ghost writer tries to compare Jesus's miracle with feeding with only a few loaves of bread and 2 fish, to Smoke and Duff bring crackers and sardines to the train and just an element that never in a few paragraph's attempted to be written in the storyline.

When the surviving three gunman cause another avalanche, get killed by it and yet the train car that the good guys disconnects makes it to safety. This one's a mix bag, the editing could be better, parts of the story are really g00d, parts are lacking and not even close to what William wrote. Jan 07, Jody rated it really liked it Shelves: I would not normally read a Christmas themed book but it was a Christmas gift and was needing something to read and it was handy.

Except for the few really really heavy Christmas references, Christmas poems, quoting the Scripture of Christ's birth and the "Night Before Christmas" performance it was a good western. Again, for all the Christmas lovers, please don't hate on me but I'm just not that into reading about "Christmassy" things. I like westerns and will read more of Johnstone's books. I l I would not normally read a Christmas themed book but it was a Christmas gift and was needing something to read and it was handy.

I like the Jensen family both Smoke and Matt. I have enjoyed the Preacher series in the past. I just don't do Christmas books. Some people do and they probably enjoyed this greatly. As for the western side of this book, it was great. This book had everything a good western is supposed to.

It had fistfights, gunfights, poker wins and losses and the men in the white hats saving the day. I've never read any of Johnstone's ventures into other genres but he hits the westerns fast and hard and I like it that way. Johnstone takes a little more time than I normally like to set up backstories and bring new and different characters to light but as you will see in the end you see why he had to take so much time explaining his cast.

It was a good book and if you are into westerns you will not be disappointed. Mar 25, Melanie Adkins rated it really liked it. While waiting for the runways to be cleared at the airport, former Ambassador Rebecca Daniels Robinson is approached by a reporter. The reporter wants to know what her most harrowing Christmas was. Several people are taking a train through Colorado at Christmas time. The train gets trapped in an avalanche with 37 people inside. With Christmas fast approaching, the children on board were hoping to be where they were going to spend Christmas.

One little girl is deathly sick and there are criminals While waiting for the runways to be cleared at the airport, former Ambassador Rebecca Daniels Robinson is approached by a reporter. One little girl is deathly sick and there are criminals holding the dining car. Will the rescue train make it in time? A book for any time of the year.

The story stresses the importance of not judging others and helping each other in times of need. Well written with full rich characters this is one you'll add to your keeper pile. I recommend this book for men and women. It's a good old fashioned western story. I found the first three chapters or so move slowly. Keep with it and the end pays off for the slow start. I gave this one 4 cheers out of 5 because of the slow start. Nov 06, Flannery rated it it was amazing. Nobody but Johnstone could mix romance, roughnecks, robbery and the wonder of the Christmas season so well.

Armed bandits take over the Red Cliff Special only a few days before Christmas to free a prisoner, not realizing the insurmountable odds fate had placed in their path. Matt Jensen, aboard the train on his way to visit Smoke and Sally for Christmas, means to help the passengers survive and with the help of some old friends, he succeeds.

Justice takes aim and fires a shot, nearly bringing down a snow-covered mountain in the process. I didn't think I would ever finish this book. The story had wonderful potential, but the execution and writing was horrible. I was shocked at the glaring errors in content. For example, there is a murder trial in the story, but the laws of or ANY timeline in U. History are completely ignored.

Trial procedures are stretched WAY past my ability to suspend belief, prisoners are allowed to sit with and freely converse with women while traveling in the Sheriff's custody, etc. There were othe I didn't think I would ever finish this book. There were other problems with historical accuracy surrounding social behaviors between men and women, the use of modern slang, and other issues that I just don't have the energy to get into.

These issues constantly pulled me out of the story, making it a chore to finish the book. I may give some of the author's very early work a try, but I'm not in a hurry after this train wreck sorry for the pun.

It's cold and the coal to fire the stoves in each car is running low. Smoke and Duff are dragging a sled of food into the mountains, unsure how they will get there, but resolute. The Senator is on the train with his wife and very sickly daughter. The sheriff is escorting a man to prison for 4 years along with a man to be hanged for holding up a man and asking for all his money.

There are others on and about the area when the train is derailed due to an avalanche. How will they survive and pull together to make it through the storm???

Easy to keep the characters straight. Love a good western and this is one of them.

I received this book from The Kennsington Books in exchange for my honest opinion. Dec 17, Sharon Chance rated it it was amazing. I read this book a few days after A Lone Star Christmas and enjoyed it much more, primarily because I just love Westerns and it was considerably better developed than Lone Star.

It also had the deus ex machina element that I personally do not appreciate but can forgive as de rigueur in Christmas stories but the supernatural is worked into the story better, and Rocky Mountain actually has an ending in which the supernatural helps them do the impossible and then they have to do the possible and I read this book a few days after A Lone Star Christmas and enjoyed it much more, primarily because I just love Westerns and it was considerably better developed than Lone Star.

Give this one an extra star for tying up some loose ends and giving us a more satisfactory ending.

Dec 17, Rob Smith rated it really liked it Recommended to Rob by: Anyone who loves a great Christmas story. This is a great addition to the Johnstone Clan cadre of western books. Well laid out story with well defined characters and a tight match to the title. Plenty or action, romance and fun. This second entry to the Christmas series is head and shoulders better than the first in the series. The characters are consistent with other series with the same characters. The writing is far sharper. The story, despite the complexity, is clear.

The conclusion very satisfying. My only quibble is some dialogue t This is a great addition to the Johnstone Clan cadre of western books. My only quibble is some dialogue that better reflects than s and at times the romance part gets a bit soppy and takes away from consistency. I recommend this book. This one is about Matt Jensen traveling on a train that becomes trapped in an avalanche, with a prisoner aboard who wrecks havoc on the stranded travelers.
