Every character is quite literally defined by the color of their skin: The racial focus becomes quite tiresome.
Boof goes on about how only black women are beautiful, only black women know how to love, only black women know how to make love, and only black women have wisdom. White women are all stupid, and white men can only achieve sexual satisfaction by raping black wo This started off fine, but it gradually degenerated into a tract about race.
White women are all stupid, and white men can only achieve sexual satisfaction by raping black women. Black men all have magnificent penises, and although they like the status of having sex with white women, they cannot be happy without the love of a black woman. Mixed-race people can never find their true identity, but should not try to fit in with white society.
If this had been written from a white perspective, it would be denounced as racist bullshit, and quite rightly. I've been interested in African literature since working for an African magazine in the s, and obviously race is something that gets talked about, but this is ineptly written and shallow. For the record, I don't think she's crazy! She crafts a love story that transcends lifetimes, and brings Africa to life. I didn't give it 5 stars due to technical writing and editing issues.
