This is the first entry in the long-running Joe Pickett series by C. Game and Fish warden for Twelve Sleep County. This is definitely an unusual setting since the area is so sparsely populated that the number of characters in the story is pretty small.
Joe is the main character and he lives in Saddlestring with his pregnant wife Marybeth and his two daughters Sheridan and Lucy. Ve A solid 4 stars. Vern Dunnegan is his mentor and previously held the warden job Joe now has. His best friend seems to be Wacey Hedeman, the warden in the next county.
The other prominent character in the book is Sheriff Bud Barnum. Since hunting and fishing is such a huge activity in Twelve Sleep County Joe is a very important person in the county, rivaling the Sheriff. There are very many non-local people who pass through his country taking advantage of the natural bounty to hunt, kill and trap the animals there.
Joe is an interesting character who like most characters that these series are built around is flawed in many ways but in this case also has a very strong law-abiding core. He goes pretty wild when his family is threatened for good reason. When Open Season took nearly every "first novel" mystery prize, it wasn't a surprise. This reissue of the Joe Pickett classic has all the tell-tale signs of greatness that would keep its author, CJ Box, crafting many more novels to come. A Wyoming native, Box infuses his books with a love of the land and the modern issues that concern the people who live there.

Trying to eke out a living, Joe doesn't take short cuts and won't look the other way when it comes to upholding his duty. This puts him squarely at odds with some very powerful locals, who are trying to use the land to enrich themselves at the expense of nature itself.
It's energy money versus endangered species in this epic novel, and readers aren't sure until the very end that good will win out over the evil.

Well, this is a Western in the classic sense. Despite all the cliches -- gun-toting ranchers, inept government officials, and men who consider themselves men because they make their living off the land, etc. Box infuses his story with the beauty and value of nature and makes readers care about his hero, Joe Pickett. There's nothing overthought or precious about this type of writing, but Box manages to show that sometimes, simple, honest truth is the best of all. Apr 10, Lynn rated it liked it. This was my first book by C. Box and luckily it was also the first in the Joe Pickett series. I really liked this book. The protagonist is an average Joe no pun intended who isn't particularly clever or handsome or strong. He is just a hard working guy trying to do his best for both his family and his job. I like books that have characters that are a bit flawed to make them more believeable.
I will definitely read more in this series. That seems to be my problem. I can now take 1 book off my This was my first book by C. Pickett is not cop, detective, or sheriff, and while educated about the things he would be -- mostly game and guns -- multiple murders are considerably outside his area of expertise.

One final unrelated thought -- author C. Box did an excellent job when he switched to Pickett's daughter Sheridan's point-of-view. Writing a realistic six-year-old girl is no easy task. A fantastic start to the Joe Pickett series.
I started this series in the middle and was not sure the beginning would be as good as the latest, but it was. Joe really puts himself on the line in this addition, he is new and messing with folks that don't want him nosing around in their business. A big developer will stop at nothing to cover up an endangered species and that includes going after Joe and his family.
Suspenseful and fast moving. Great as a stand alone as well. Joe Pickett is a Wyoming game warden, just an all-around good guy. He doesn't seem to have any major baggage or drama that he carries to work with him. He doesn't seem to habitually bend the rules or laws in his pursuit of justice, or at least not yet. These are some of the features that I love about many of the detective and crime series that I love to read. I'm looking at you, Harry Bosch. But in this first Pickett book, I found that Joe Pickett really loves his job, he loves the land and animals that he protects, and he wants his family to respect him for what he does.
He's a regular guy. Joe also isn't known for being a sharpshooter or one of "tough-guy" types, which is interesting given the way the story begins and the way everything unfolds, but I'm handing out no spoilers here. But this was neat and different and refreshing for me. Again, a regular guy. I love the premise of the story, the way CJ Box marries endangered animals, big game hunting, and the environment into the plot. She was so delightful in this story and became a fast favorite as I listened. She was essential to the plot, she moved the story forward, and I wanted to know more about her.
I loved her time on the pages and she was just a cool, cool kid. I picked up this series to begin with because I love the Wyoming country so much. I've taken these huge road trips from my own place here in Eastern North Carolina across the US twice now, and a big part of both of those trips was spent in Wyoming. It is no exaggeration that I think about that land and want to be back there almost every single day. CJ Box has put me right back there with his descriptions of the land and the nature. If I can't be there in person, being there with this book and audiobook is very, very cool. I very rarely read books in a series close together or back-to-back, but I immediately bought the second audiobook and made sure to have the next two Pickett books on hand.
I'm not sure if I love Joe Pickett more or the setting, but either way, I feel like I'm throwing everything aside so I can keep going. Honestly, he doesn't have the most "tough guy" voice that I've ever heard and I thought Pickett was supposed to be this big game warden out of Wyoming, so I was expecting something maybe a little heavier or deeper.
However, by the end of the first scene and within the first few chapters, as I began to get to know Joe, I realized that David Chandler is so perfect for this role. He was also so great when he was reading little Sheridan's parts too. By the end of the book, I had researched the entire audiobook series to see if Mr. Chandler continues to narrate because I enjoyed it so much, so I feel pretty sure that I'll continue listening from Audible since the narrator has not changed.

People have secrets, will warn and threaten others to 'keep quiet' about those secrets. This is why I think most conspiracy theories are utter crap. You want to keep a really big secret? Tell no one, or if you tell one friend, you must kill him or her.

I know women who worked up until the day the baby dropped out and were back to work within a few weeks.
Then another two men, associated with the first dead man, are found dead at an elk-hunting camp high in the hills. Joe's also in another dicey situation: And then there are these little furry critters and their mysterious scat, and so Still he loves his job and who wouldn't?

Off alone for long periods of time, up on your horse in the hills and mountains, always carrying a weapon or two for protection, checking on hunters and hunting camps, etc. It's a dream job for many people, except for the pay being so darn lousy. Anyhow, Joe is in a dilemma - or dilemon as my kids used to say - and when his family is directly threatened he finds the John Wayne or Gary Cooper in his blood and soul.
So a good enough mystery, but maybe not enough for me to continue with the series. Not sure about that, though, as I rather like Joe. In relation to my first reason for reading this series, it fell a little flat. But that has nothing to do with the book it self.

Obviously this is a different series by a different author so I can not expect it to be the same. Due to that fact I did not take that into account when rating this book. This book was a little slow for me and didn't really pick up until the end but that was ok with me since the book was under pages.

If it has been any longer I may not have enjoyed it. By mid book you already have an idea about who the bad guy was but that did not take away from the story. I kinda assumed this would be a relaxing modern day western who-done-it, but in reality the things that Joe went through were really stressful and by the end you find yourself rooting for him and his family. Although I found it slow and stressful, lol, I enjoyed the plot and in the end enjoyed it. I think the rest of the series has a lot of promise and I intend to read the next installment.

The mystery was solid. It's pretty obvious what's going on and who's behind it but it was still intriguing and satisfying to see all of the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. The plot is unique and I appreciate that. The topic of endangered species and a mystery surrounding that is not something that I've seen before and Box is able to navigate it well. The main character, Joe Pickett, was the atypical protagonist. A good natured, hard working, family man who is a game warden in Wyoming. I li The mystery was solid. I liked him and the rest of the characters were written well also.
The writing is solid. Box switches the point of view from Joe to his young daughter effortlessly and it's pretty convincing. The pacing is fine. The book is under pages so it's a quick read and the last 75 pages or so go by quickly. The Wyoming wilderness and surrounding landscapes were depicted well and added a nice touch to the novel and added an additional sense of intrigue.
It's nice to take a break from the city and traverse the wilderness from time to time. Predictable but enjoyable ending. I liked this one. It's not fantastic or amazing but there wasn't anything that I necessarily didn't like about it either so it gets 5 stars from me. A solid mystery novel with a bit of different plot from the norm.
