Bathing a patient with dementia/Alzheimer's

Perfect Paperback Verified Purchase. There is such a richness and wisdom contained in this little book - not just regarding a deep love for one's aging parent, whose mind is failing, but it is also punctuated with many touching lessons for being caring human beings. We have been given a wonderful capacity for reason. This ability has also been tempered by two other precious gifts: Susan Garbett has used all these qualities in choosing the particular events she has shared with us through her book. She has framed her experiences in order to share the decisions, disappointments, difficulties and, yes, delights in walking this twisted path of dementia.

What struck me the most was that she has shared her journey with her father - at times legal or financial, educational or medical, emotional or practical - which was supported by a foundation of deep faith. Garbett has smoothly woven into her book many practical suggestions for enriching the life of a person with dementia. She has also thoughtfully supplied resources for the patient, their family and their caregivers. While all of the content speaks of her great love and respect for the man her father always was, despite the changes caused by this disease, she is also speaking to all of her readers about our responsibility to uphold the dignity of the person and our obligation to still honor those suffering in this way.

"Susie and Me Days" by Susan L. Garbett

The author describes vivid and nostalgic stories of many happy times with her father, which makes me think of my own father and our special relationship. She also describes the challenges and how she'd learned to cope. She shares many tips that are helpful to anyone caring for a love one I haven't read a book in a long time but glad that I'd made time to read this one! This is a must read! One person found this helpful. A Useful Tool for All. This memoir is a remarkably rich mixture of personal experiences and useful medical and behavioral guidelines to follow when confronted with the tragedy of dementia.

As such it will prove uniquely useful to both physicians and family members alike. The narrative contains so many wonderful situations described with humor, pathos and pure humanity that it makes for riveting reading. Susie and Me Days: Joy in the Shadow of Dementia

This book is the poignant story of the journey made by the author and her father as they deal with his symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. There are several books available about dementia, but this book is different in a very important way--the author shares the many ways she was able to bring joy to her father, to the family, and to family friends despite his illness.

I recommend this book for anyone who has, is, or will be caring for or interacting with a person suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Over the years, I have had 3 relatives who suffered from Alzheimer's disease. Garbett's explanation of what physical problems can be expected helped me understand many aspects of the disease. Ms Garbett also provides information about many available resources and provides guidance for family and friends about how to relate with an Alzheimer's patient. As a family care physician, I am always interested in resources that I can recommend to my patients who often ask for more information on a large variety of health-related topics.

That is why after reading this wonderful, intimate account, I am delighted to put it at the top of my list as a resource for patients dealing with dementia in a loved one. Presented as if the author is telling a friend her story, the challenges and the rewards of her relationship with her father, it is, not obvious to the reader, a fount of excellent information on the topic of dementia. For anyone looking to increase your understanding of this disease in an easy, readable fashion while at the same time learn valuable insights and information, I highly recommend Susie and Me Days.

An easy read on a painful topic, and one that many are afraid to face. Through her telling of the story, Susan gives us the tools to cope and better understand the entire disease process and how to respond to the patient and our own feelings. Her insightful observations give those of us who don't understand dememtia or how to deal with it a vision towards coming to peace with the reality of the situation. Not an easy thing to do. I wish I was able to read the book prior to having to live the story with her.

I now have a better understanding of how my own fears, lack of patience and misunderstanding kept me from being more active in the lives of those we love. Susan Garbett's ability to recount stories as a child growing up in Baltimore brought back so many memories of my childhood.
