These dolls are historically significant; one was crafted for Charles Dickens's young daughter in the mids, and is worth big money. The doll show is only a curiosity for Dunc and Amos, until the Dickens doll and a few others are stolen from the owner of the collection. He has to leave town and continue the doll tour elsewhere, but Dunc and Amos live here. They'll track down the thief, Dunc vows, even if Amos is only helping so Melissa, the girl he likes, will notice him.
Interviewing local collectors brings the boys to a gated mansion guarded by a Rottweiler. This has to be the perpetrator's home; why else would he need such security? Dunc figures he can get an idea of the house's interior layout if he or Amos dresses like a girl and asks to speak with the owner about his doll collection, and of course Amos gets roped into doing it. Something suspicious is going on inside, Amos informs Dunc afterward.
Dunc's Doll
The stolen Dickens doll must be on the premises, but the police won't likely investigate based on a hunch by a couple of kids. Dunc and Amos need to sneak inside the house at night and find the doll themselves, which means eluding the Rottweiler posted at the gate. Are Dunc and Amos about to prove that kids can solve a mystery that baffles the police, or will a ring of violent criminals cut short their detective careers? Gary Paulsen's Culpepper Adventures are nothing like his wilderness or philosophy novels.
They play out like a situation comedy television series for kids, complete with wacky gags that stretch the limits of believability. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not transcendent literature. Nonetheless, hanging out with Dunc and Amos is fun, and there are some real laughs.
Dunc's Doll will probably never be mistaken for The Haymeadow , but I'd consider rating it one and a half stars. You'll find at least some good in anything written by Gary Paulsen.
