The biggest question about a Hastings housing cooperative is whether there are enough seniors here willing to sell their homes and move into the new development. Demand for new housing isn't an issue, Welle said. Plans for senior housing here are still in the early stages. The developers don't even have a drawing yet of what the building could look like, and Greenhouse Village hasn't made any formal offers to the city to purchase the property. Anyone who might be interested in taking advantage of new housing would have about a year from the time they commit to the project till it's ready to move into, during which they could get their own houses ready to sell, Welle said.

An informational meeting will be held at Hastings City Hall at 2 p. Thursday, March The meeting will be a chance for potential residents to learn more about the cooperative as well as an opportunity for Greenhouse Village to gauge the level of interest in Hastings. Now, he is responsible for plant health and production from nursery stocks, annual team baskets and perennials, to applying herbicides, pre-emergents, regulators and biologicals. The garden center — which is open from April to Dec. But even with the extended season, Wenninger says last year was still the biggest startup with the worst winter. This year was the same thing; crummy weather in the beginning, then lots of people. They even have plans to build a new, 10, square foot greenhouse that will be open from February through December.

If they have a wet April — like last year — people come back for perennials, trees and shrubs because they drown, he says. According to Owner Joanna Steckle, some of the trends seen in her market are different from the ones seen by other growers in the U.

Steckle, who runs the operation with her husband, Melvin and their children, has instead seen plants like Boston Ferns become more and more popular. The ferns are the only crop sold in the garden center not grown by Steckle's. How profits are tabulated, she says, makes it difficult to see how the margins on the ferns compare to plants grown by Steckle. Overall, Steckle believes that the outlook for the ornamental business is stronger than the outlook for produce sales.

Year-to-year, she says flower sales go up while produce sales either stagnate or dip slightly. Additionally, she says the greenhouse crops are less labor-intensive than the produce production, which covers seven acres outdoors. Now, this year, something changed, and we have people coming from two hours away. Steckle says the next challenge is to fine-tune their plant mix, as there is no room to expand and add more growing space, unless some of the produce space was sacrificed.
