In humid conditions, bones might be broken down in a matter of a decade or so, but in a dry climate, it could take thousands of years! Bones do decay, just at a slower rate than other types of organic material and tissue. In that context, the phrase is meant to suggest that our bodies come from the earth, and will eventually return to it. So, although flesh and tissue tends to break down rather quickly, bones have an impressive ability to stick around. To properly understand the variability of bones in human and animal bodies, a bit of background on the process of decomposition can be quite helpful.

Decomposition happens to all organic matter, and while every organism breaks down in a different way, the basic concept is the same. In order to recycle organic matter, chemical processes break down organisms into simpler forms that can be absorbed and reused within the biome. Bodies can be broken down in two main ways: The rate of decomposition depends on many factors, including temperature, humidity, insect presence, exposure to air, acidity of the soil, and dozens of other variables. A human body could lose all of its flesh and tissue in as little as a week, or it could remain in place for thousands of years!

It all depends on the conditions the body is in, and the same thing is true for bones. Although many people believe that bones never break down, when you think about it logically, that would be impossible. After all the hundreds of millions of years of life on this planet in which humans have only been around for a minute fraction , if bones never decayed, they would be everywhere! We think of bones as solid and firm parts of our skeleton, that can snap like a piece of chalk when we are injured badly.

It tells a series of stories that are more interconnected by the world they take place in and in some cases a series of events that happened over a thousand years ago. It's well written, it has neat ideas, I'd really like to see more of it and quite looking forward to the next book which, judging by the brief glimpse at the end of this one, will introduce new characters.

If you're unused to fantasy, and don't like the things I've mentioned or are particularly critical, I'd suggest avoiding it. But in the end it's a good book.

It tells a sprawling tale weaving together stories from dozens of characters across an entire continent in a high-fantasy setting. The novel strongly reminded me of the Book of the Malazan Fallen series by Stephen Erikson, and is a powerful debut novel from Munro. I enjoyed this novel and devouring its pages felt effortless. The characters are all well-realised, and the world-building is impressive. Munro has created an enormous world with a deep history.

He has invested the time to provide us a fresh fantasy landscape, without relying on the cliches some fantasy series fall back on. Munro does a good job of weaving between his various plot threads and POVs, setting the stage for his different pieces to coalesce into a cohesive whole.

However, he's playing the long game, and many of these threads remain separate at the end of the book. Bones of the Past is a great novel for those who enjoy gritty, sprawling high fantasy such as that produced by Stephen Erikson. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Bones of the Past is absolutely unlike any of the other fantasy novels I've read.

Dust and Bones - Forever (Moon Dust Collaboration)

Heed my warning now: Do not approach this book expecting a slow-building narrative throughline. This story doesn't have the same layer-within-layer plots of The Song of Ice and Fire.

It doesn't have the character journey of Lord of the Rings. Bones of the Past hits the ground running and never lets up. Armies are on the march, mad wizards plot for domination of lords and the overthrow of gods, and demons claw at their cages to wreak destruction on the world of mortals. Bones of the Past is to fantasy novels what a massive Role-playing-game like Dragon Age is to video games.

Don't be surprised to find that the 'magic system' in Bones isn't really well explained - because magic is just part of the world. Don't be surprised to see that many characters in Bones' cast are blessed with crazy powers and world-rending artifacts and weapons. This book is on steroids! Munro does an excellent job of keeping all of their trials and tribulations straight, and pacing out the chapters dedicated to each.

The story ends on the mother of all cliffhangers which, for those in the know, is very apt description in this case , and the sample chapter of Munro's sequel "The Tides of Madness" was arguably the best part of this book. I cannot wait to see where these characters end up. See all 11 reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 10 months ago.

My fearless approach to these things is not acknowledgable in my head. I just don't see it in myself yet. Hours later of driving and stopping along the road to sleep, I've arrived at a space center where they keep things locked entirely, and although people there give me their looks, at least I know one good thing about my father.

That is his code the safe that keeps a good fortune of money. Nevada makes me uncomfortable. I've been here many times, on trips with my dad. And I crossed my fingers that I didn't encounter anyone I know, or knows me. I'm doubtful, though, as I unlock my father's safe, and find the fortune he keeps inside. I sigh to myself, tension in my shoulders dropping. There's at least a million in here. Where my father gets his money is not my business either. I tend to look away from these subjects.

I only grab whatever there is and pour it into a backpack, one that I strap onto my back and lock the safe again. My lips press together as I hastily leave the area, going into the car that I have to dump before it's reported stolen. I go to whatever nearest shop there is and grab clothes. I am haste to get away from the public eye.

And as if sleep wasn't already haunting me, I run into a large amount of fatigue. I force myself awake to drive at least another couple of miles to Boulder City, Nevada to a hotel. I nearly fall asleep on the steering wheel before I even get help from the employees here.
