Great read Although a touchy subject of adultery this book was an easy and enjoyable read. I did not like the friends of Lindsey and that fact made me root for Lindsey more in her search for happiness. In an ode to the polished and poised housewife, Alisa Schindler ticks all the boxes in her novel, Secrets of the Suburbs. Lindsay is everything she's supposed to be, and has everything she's supposed to have, on the outside. She was raised in an upper-middle class home with the usual tennis accomplishments one would expect , and married into the cusp of the elite with a beautiful doctor husband and two kids—naturally, one boy and one girl.

She has the ideal house in the right neighborhood, desi In an ode to the polished and poised housewife, Alisa Schindler ticks all the boxes in her novel, Secrets of the Suburbs.

We love unconventional movies and we want to share our enthusiasm with you.

She has the ideal house in the right neighborhood, designer handbags and plenty of money to stuff in them, and enough wine and Xanax to keep it all together. But there's more than meets the eye when we dig past the surface, and things begin to boil over when Lindsay imbibes on top-shelf liquor and John, her friend's husband, enters the picture. It's never easy keeping things a secret in the suburbs, especially when a Facebook page is on a mission to out it all.

Secrets of the Suburbs by Alisa Schindler is a delicious read. Schindler takes the typical housewife story mold and brings the reader inside, on a sexy, intriguing, and wholly engrossing ride. There is a cookie cutter picture of perfection that is almost instantly shattered by characters that are layered and thoroughly developed.

Secrets of the Suburbs

The writing is straightforward and tight, and reading it feels akin to a conversation; a front-row seat to the recesses of someone's mind. It was exciting to watch the story unfold—and, kind of implode,—from the multiple point of views we're given. I recommend Secrets of the Suburbs to anyone looking for an enticing, provocative book written for lovers of all things Real Housewives.

There are certain landscapes that have been described so often they exist as much in the imagination as in reality. A first-time visitor to New York will find it difficult to see the city with fresh eyes as she walks down the familiar streets of Woody Allen movies. Parts of London will always belong to Dickens, and to this day Casablanca remains more a romantic symbol than an actual city.

In , the Mississippi-born novelist Richard Ford spoke about how difficult it was to write about the South after Faulkner had described it so vividly. Where he went was Princeton, N. The word brings to mind a number of images and associations, many of them negative. The suburb is a land of white-picket fences and well-trimmed lawns, of teenage angst and mindless materialism. A quick look at their history shows us that their image as a conformist prison is as old as the suburbs themselves. In popular depictions, it seems you either love the suburbs or you hate them.

In his book SuburbanNation , literary critic Robert Beuka argues that suburbia has given us utopias and dystopias, but very few artists have offered a more nuanced approach. In consumer advertising, lifestyle magazines, and television shows like Leave it To Beaver and Father Knows Best , suburbia is the place where the promise of a happy family life, secure employment, and material comfort has been realized — the physical embodiment of the American dream.

Filmmakers and authors, punk bands and folk singers have all attacked suburbia as a centre of mindless consumption and stifling social conformity. Published in in the midst of the s suburban building boom, the novel lays out some of the basic characterizations of the suburbs that we find over and over in subsequent depictions.

The novel tells the story of George F. At first, Babbitt loves the advantages of the homogenous suburbs. As the novel progresses, however, Babbitt comes to associate the standardization of his environment with the standardization of his life.

I still did not get it, personally as Johnson peeled back the layers but it made sense based on how well the character, Bea and her issues were drawn. The book has something for many readers; there is the thread of marriage, parenting, dealing with self-esteem and eating issues and the chord that trembles in holding together relationships of all types.

The characters are developed in such a way this reader came away recognizing how we often maneuver our way through life, excusing and accepting so many things that can be utterly soul destroying. Sadequa Johnson has a gift for peeling away layers and revealing what actually goes on in suburban life as opposed to what it looks like.

I absolutely loved this novel! There is some "Felicia" in all of us, and the degree is determined by each person's personal experience in life. But she is so easy to relate to, whether you're a wife, mother, or not. I moved with her through this glimpse into her life and felt her frustration, her disappointment, and her fear as her life began to unravel. I felt her uncertainty and the pull back into the dark side of her life as she tried to deal with her past and her loss of control. And I felt her sense of hopefulness and determination as she attempts to hold on to the the things that she knows are precious and worth fighting for.

This novel left me breathless.

I wanted to ditch work and stay home reading until I finished the book but I didn't, of course. I read "Love in a Carry-on Bag" when it first came out and loved that one, too. I hope you're out there working on your next novel I'll be waiting for it! Felicia loves her husband and children, but that real love does not drive her care for them.

  5. She is driven to be the perfect wife and mother to make up for events from her teenage years that she blames herself for. She feels so guilty about her past that she treats the events like dirty little secrets she can't let anyone know about. When the past confronts her, she makes bad decision after bad decision leading to a major crisis.

She has to go home and deal with the past issues before she can forgive herself and move forward. The writing, pacing, story arc, plot twists are great. The characters are real enough. Some of the scenes are kinda hot; while not distasteful, I did have to skip over them. The ending would have been a disappointing "happily ever after" except for two things. Felicia's continued dishonesty may be yet another bad decision that would be for the reader to decide.

Also, the secondary characters are left with all their faults. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Second House from the corner is a book about marriage, secrets, and lies. I really enjoyed this book, the author did a good job keeping you intrigued. Secrets and lies are never good in a relationship. One they will haunt you and two they will always come back to cause havoc in your relationship just when you think all things are clear and you feel you can go on with your life.

I really enjoyed this book. I grew up in Philly and live in New Jersey so I knew so many of the places mentioned. But this book goes beyond the locale and speaks to many topics with realism and understanding. Motherhood, the past, marriage, family ties and trying to balance between two worlds. I thought it was excellently written and would highly recommend it to others.
