Help is here for those who struggle to know where they stand with Jesus Christ. In this Crucial Questions booklet, R. Sproul shows Christians the one sure path to deep, lasting joy: By abiding in Christ, Sproul shows, believers experience fullness of joy—a joy that transcends unhappy circumstances and even permits us to rejoice with others because of the blessed hope Christ provides.

As human beings, we long to know that our lives will unfold in pleasant and rewarding ways. As Christians, we have a different focus—we want our lives to be pleasing to God. Thus, we ponder his will and worry that we are not doing what he wants us to do.

Can I Trust the Bible? - Crucial Questions Series, #2 (Second Printing)

Sproul outlines timeless principles for discovering and applying the will of God in day-to-day decisions. He then illustrates how these principles should inform two of the most significant decisions we face in life—the choice of a career and the choice of a spouse. Here is valuable guidance for those who are passionate to follow God. But, according to R. Sproul in this Crucial Questions booklet, the critics of the Bible are wrong.

In fact, he says there are many solid reasons to trust the Bible. With Jesus, with the apostles and prophets, and with people of God throughout church history, Sproul affirms a high view of Scripture—that it is inspired of God and therefore inerrant and infallible. In Does God Control Everything? Sproul explores and explains the Christian doctrine of providence—the teaching that God is the sovereign ruler of the universe. He then deals with some of the philosophical and theological questions and objections the doctrine raises.

His teaching challenges popular assumptions about the universe and exalts God as the sovereign ruler and sustainer of all things. Does prayer make any difference? Does it really change anything? Sproul in this Crucial Questions booklet. Plus, it is one of the chief means by which God carries out his will in the world. For these reasons, Sproul argues, prayer has a vital place in the life of the Christian. Therefore, a Christian conscience must be nurtured and developed.

In this booklet, R. Sproul shows that this development involves learning and mastering the many principles God has laid down in his Word, and even in creation itself. As we gain a firmer grasp of what God expects and requires, we are increasingly able to make decisions that please him. On what basis do we make all of these decisions? Sproul argues that the Bible is the supreme source for ethical guidance. With his trademark wisdom and thoroughness, Sproul explains how we can uncover and apply these principles.

What must we do with our guilt? Sproul shows how God can use our feelings of guilt to reveal our true guilt in his sight. He then prescribes the only remedy—the forgiveness that God has provided through Jesus Christ. Here is solid biblical counsel for those who hear the accusations of their consciences.

Sproul cuts through the confusion and carefully explains what it means, biblically and theologically, to be born again. His clear teaching will provide understanding for those who are unfamiliar with the new birth and deeper assurance for those who may not know where they stand with God. Sproul provides help in understanding and appreciating this practice of the church. The word faith is heard often these days, but it is given many different meanings.

Sometimes it is used in the sense of trust. Other times, it has more to do with hope. Perhaps most often, it is used to mean belief in something apart from rational or empirical support. Because faith is central to the Christian life, believers must have a clear understanding of how the Bible defines the word and the concept. Sproul looks to Hebrews 11, the great faith chapter of the Bible, for a definition of faith and numerous examples of it in the lives of the saints.

He shows that faith, in scriptural terms, is not believing in God but believing God and living according to his Word. Armed with this helpful teaching, readers will gain clarity as to whether the faith they profess is the genuine article. Peter and Paul urged people to repent as well. The concept of repentance is central to the Christian life. But what does it mean to repent? Sproul unfolds the biblical concept of repentance, especially examining repentance as it relates to regeneration.

When the word church is mentioned, many people tend to think of a formal building with a steeple and stained-glass windows. For others, the word brings to mind the idea of a denomination. But the church is much more. Sproul carefully and clearly explains that the church is a body of people saved by Jesus Christ and regenerated by the Holy Spirit who live to glorify and enjoy God.

Because this book isn't an apologetic for the trustworthiness of the Bible it's a treatise on the inerrancy of the Bible that Dr. Sproul wrote for the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy back in the 's. As a result, this book presumes that the Bible IS trustworthy and starts from there. The overall tone is declarative and dogmatic rather than explanatory and evidence based and, therefore, acts as a kind of "reasons to believe for those who already believe" style work of the type that skeptics and critics of the Bible very rightly roll their eyes over.

Fellow Christians Apologists, please listen to what I'm going to say next: Don't dogmatize, give supporting evidence. Please bear in mind that I am IN Dr. Sproul's camp and agree with the contents of the book. The problem ISN'T the content here, the problem is the branding. IMO, this book should be pulled off the market and replaced with a book targeted at skeptics that actually delivers on the title.

To that end, I recommend the following works as alternatives to this book: A Treatise On Biblical Inerrancy". When someone asks me if they can trust the Bible, the last thing they are looking for is an exposition of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. Unfortunately, that is exactly what Sproul gives them. He walks through the theological foundations for why we think the Bible has authority, why we consider it revelation, what inerrant means, etc, etc.

This is all decent discussion, but does not meet the needs for the heart of the person asking if the Bible can be "trusted. He also covers some basic concerns like 1 the difference between the technical precision of ancient writing and modern writing, 2 the existence of hyperbole in the Scripture, and 3 the occasional grammatical and spelling inconsistencies.

Additionally, in a Kindle format, this book is offered free. But it is a free and provides a generally good overview of some important doctrines, though from a narrow perspective.

Based on the title, I expected to read about issues of inspiration, canon, translation, and interpretation. The booklet is actually focused on inerrancy and infallibility , because it's Dr. Sproul's commentary on the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. There are very few Bible references.

One person found this helpful. I love these books by Sproul. They are short and cut to the chase! I plan on reading all the books in this series! Sproul gives a very detailed treatment concerning the infallibility of the Bible. It is difficult in places to capture the meaning of what is written.

I did not expect such an in-depth analysis of the Bible and Calvinism but it was good read and interesting facts. Can I Trust the Bible is an excellent document for all those who are skeptic about the Bible, and for those who trust the Bible but have no solid, logical and objective proof for their trust. Written by a group of renowned authorities and scholars of Christian theology, the book is a concise and well sequenced examination of the topic. As always with these books, a succinct and thorough analysis. See all reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 1 month ago.
