We like to do this. But when we take the working definition of bullshit that I proposed earlier, we begin to see that it may be pathologically pleasurable on a sociological scale. A thought experiment demonstrates the pressure to engage much of society now likely feels on a regular basis. Then they turn to you; you feel you must offer something to the conversation, so you provide some bullshit to keep the conversation going and to avoid being left out of your group.
Now, this is happening on a grand scale via social media today.
Because important events trigger lots of social media chatter, users of social media are bombarded with bullshit and feel like they need to contribute their share. And we like doing this. Imagine if all bullshit were eliminated from the information you receive for a single day. How much information would you receive relative to what you receive typically including bullshit? I suspect that between half and three quarters of all information we receive on a daily basis is bullshit, though I have no empirical evidence to back this up at this time.

As anthropologist David Graeber elucidated in his recent book Bullshit Jobs , much of the population spends considerable amounts of time doing bullshit work, and many people who have bullshit jobs know this to be the case. Doing what we perceive to be not much more than menial bullshit inevitably leads to restlessness. Thus, we take to bullshitting via social media or otherwise to provoke some kind of feedback or engagement with others we find rewarding.
Bullshit communication can fill this role because, as I mentioned earlier, the very act of communication is pleasurable for humans, and communication in and of itself cannot be bullshit.

Thus we undertake to engage in a non-bullshit act, communication, to offset the ennui that develops as a result of making bullshit contributions to society otherwise. As the population continues to expand, it seems inevitable that the prevalence of bullshit jobs will continue to increase because, as technology increases efficiency, the percentage of the population that needs to be employed in meaningful work to provide for the needs of the whole population will decrease.
However, unless we embrace something like a universal basic income, bullshit jobs will continue to proliferate, and with increasing numbers of people basically toiling aimlessly, the amount of bullshit communication will inexorably rise as well. Bullshit awareness will help us identify truly meaningful information and give it corresponding weight. It will help us maintain perspective in our modern bullshit-laden society.
