In either case, hopelessly straight laced suburban mother than I am, tales of nicotine and alcohol abuse tend not so much to amuse as to disturb me. Happily, there's more to the book than substance abuse. And when Notaro turns from tales of drunkenness to, say, vaginal exams and maxi pads, she's laugh-out-loud funny. In fact, this book set me laughing a good many times, as, for example, when Notaro reprimands Monica Lewinski for the effect she's had on the author's grandmother: Because of you, I have to explain to my nana, while she's in a hospital bed with an enlarged gallbladder, what oral sex is.
Do you see the damage you've caused? Do you see where your sinful path has led? Now that I've gotten to know Notaro, so to speak, I'm eager to read more from her. Just the right mix of humor and pathos to be hugely enjoyable and entertaining. Laurie Notaro could be your best friend -sitting there at the kitchen table telling it like it is.

She could be your sister sharing secrets no one else knows. This brand of funny is contagious and you will want to share the laughter and sometimes the honest little jabs of pain Funny and fearlessly confessional tales of smoking, drinking, brawling, mate-seeking, peeing, defecating, menstruating, undressing, nudity, dentistry and gynecology in Phoenix. While sexuality is prominent, and male partners are mentioned, the relationships and physical appearances described mainly concern females; friends and relatives and children I am not usually guilty of deconstructionist literary criticism, but in this case could not help thinking of Freud's "Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie" Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality, the one where he explains the oral, anal and genital stage stuff which is not as funny but may explain some of Notaro's preoccupations, or rather the pleasure we get out of reading about them.

The author may not be what everyone likes to read about, she drinks and she smokes. Big no nos in todays' society it seems.

But still was very funny. She tells about a trip to her gyno where she has helpers trying to find the missing speculum. Or explaining the Bill Clinton scandal to her grandmother who mishears it as "Moral Sex. Sometimes I found myself laughing out loud despite those around me looking at me like I was crazy. I just don't find these essays particularly funny.
They are supposedly about the single dating life, but there is too much focus on drunkenness. I couldn't even finish.
