Qualities that Make Michael Interesting One quality that made Phelps worth reading about was his amazing accomplishments in swimming. I wanted to to learn more about his personal story and what inspired him. Michael Phelps was born on June 30, in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents divorced when he was ten years old. As a young boy Phelps struggled in school because of his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder also known as ADHD, but with the help of swimming he learned how to cope with it.
