Maybe Annie has a point that getting into a spiral of self-criticism and sarcasm was what made the process self-defeating.

It's a thought, coupled with an emotion, most likely fear or anger. Many people are not in touch with their emotions because they confuse emotions with complicated thoughts. Emotions may be difficult to experience but they are easy to identify.

Thoughts, not so much. If I say "I'm sad", I may spend the next hour with "I'm sad" repeating in my head like a pop song that won't go away.
